Booms and Busts: Week 4 pinball with Aaron Rodgers

It's a common frame every week – some fantasy players exceed our expectations, some fantasy players let us down. Here's a scoreboard from the first-wave of Week 4 action.

Booms

-- Packers Offense: After a tricky first three weeks, it was refreshing to see the Packers back at full throttle in their romp at Chicago. Aaron Rodgers played just about a perfect game (22-for-28 passing, 302 yards, four touchdowns), and he brought his big-name receivers along for the ride (Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb combined for 221 yards and four touchdowns). The game was at Soldier Field, but the Packers banged on the drum all day.

Eddie Lacy owners didn't enjoy the game nearly as much, though he at least contributed something (59 total yards on 18 touches, one touchdown). A second Lacy touchdown was wiped out by a holding penalty. The Packers host Minnesota on Thursday.

-- The Smiths, WRs, Baltimore: Stop me if you think you've heard this one before – Steve Smith has the highest motor of any player we've ever seen. And when his old Carolina chums came to town, he flicked the switch up to 11, dominating the game from start to finish (139 receiving yards, two TDs). Sure, his 61-yard touchdown was a little fluky, a tipped pass intended for a teammate, but Smith has a way of making his own breaks. The Panthers interfered with Smith on his second touchdown, but No. 89 made the grab anyway.

Torrey Smith's day was much quieter (2-53-1 on three targets), but at least he found the end zone for the first time this season. Anything to quell the panic. Baltimore heads to Indianapolis for Week 5.

-- Ryan Tannehill, QB, Dolphins: Rumors of a benching didn't seem to bother him, nor did a trip to London. The Dolphins quarterback put on a jolly good show (21-for-31, 278 yards, two scores), perhaps saving Joe Philbin's job in the progress. Spot on, Tannehill. Had the Raiders offense put up a little bit of a fight, Tannehill could have posted much better numbers. Instead, he was wearing a baseball cap on the sidelines before the game was complete.

Miami's big-name playmakers also were heard from: Lamar Miller scored a couple of touchdowns, and Mike Wallace spiked for the third time in four weeks (saving an otherwise quiet 3-35 game). The Dolphins are off in Week 5, then host Green Bay the following Sunday.

-- Delanie Walker, TE, Titans: The Titans quarterback change didn't bother Walker one bit, nor did his shoulder injury. Walker posted a 5-84 line on seven targets, and scored his third touchdown in four weeks. He'll look to keep it going against Cleveland next week. The Tennessee wideouts aren't getting a thing done, but Walker is open every week.

-- Heath Miller, TE, Steelers: He was missing in action over the first three weeks, but Miller dominated the Buccaneers linebackers and safeties in Week 4, rolling up a 10-85-1 afternoon on 11 targets. Miller had another touchdown wiped out by a penalty, though it came on the drive where he subsequently scored. Antonio Brown also posted a big day: 7-131-2 through the air, and a nifty 17-yard pass on a gadget play. There are plenty of reasons the Steelers let this game slip away to Tampa Bay, but don't blame the big-name receivers.

Busts

-- Calvin Johnson, WR, Lions: When Megatron is on a football field, you have to start him for fantasy. The upside is too great, the talent too immense. Alas, his balky ankle limited him against the Jets (he played about half of the snaps), and he finished with just two catches for 12 yards. Hopefully he's back to full health for next week's home date against Buffalo.

-- Cam Newton, QB, Panthers: Here's another star player who's playing hurt, and it showed: Newton finished 14-for-25 passing for 197 yards and one score in Sunday's rout at Baltimore. He seemed reluctant to run, scrambling just twice for seven yards, and forget about garbage time production – the Panthers used understudy Derek Anderson to finish up. Newton isn't an automatic fantasy starter for the time being, even with the Bears waiting in Week 5.

-- Geno Smith, QB, Jets: Two more turnovers for New York's erratic quarterback, and no one throws a parade for a 6.3 YPA. He wasn't a factor on the ground, either (four carries, four yards). If Smith doesn't clean up his play in short order, the Jets might be tempted to give Michael Vick a chance to play. It's not a move we'd endorse – a second-year quarterback needs development time – but the Jets make a lot of screwy decisions. Next week's game at San Diego will be a good barometer of where Smith is at.

-- Arian Foster, RB, Texans: Give Foster credit for gutting it out through his hamstring injury, though he didn't go anywhere on the ground (eight carries, six yards). At least he bailed out his owners through the passing game, collecting 55 yards on seven catches. The get-well Cowboys defense waits for Week 5.

-- Panthers Defense: When you allow 454 yards and 38 points to an offense led by Joe Flacco, it's not an afternoon you're proud of. The Panthers didn't record a sack or takeaway, and they were beaten 10-of-13 times on third down.
