The Washington Capitals, with Barry Trotz as their head coach, are now nipping at the heels of the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders in the Metropolitan Division.
This after a 1-0 win over the rival Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday. Jason Chimera scored at the 3:13 mark of the first period. It stood as the winner. Braden Holtby put forward a tidy 21-save performance for his fourth shutout of the season in his 20th straight start.
Further to that, Holtby has allowed allowed just two goals combined in his last three games.
The Capitals are on a roll. They’re feeling it. They move to within two points of the Penguins and three back of the division-leading Islanders. They have yet to lose in regulation this month with six wins in seven games.
Meanwhile, not only did the injury-plagued Flyers suffer a loss on the scoreboard, but forward Scott Laughtonleft the game late in the second period after being on the receiving end of a massive open-ice hit from Capitals blue liner Matt Niskanen.
According to the Flyers, Laughton suffered an upper-body injury.
