Zippy takes top spot for NCAA Tournament mascots in Sports Illustrated list
She doesn’t look a day older than her nearly 70 years and like any enduring icon, Zippy, the mascot for the University of Akron athletics teams, only gets better.
The magnetic marsupial picked up more recognition this week when Patrick Andres, a writer for SI.com, ranked the mascots from each team in the NCAA Tournament, which the Zips will play Thursday when they take on Creighton.
Zippy, she of the wily ways, took the top spot in the rundown.
She’s been in the spotlight before, earning 2007 Capital One Mascot of the Year by a vote of fans.
For the record, Flash from Kent State and Brutus from The Ohio State University were nowhere to be seen on the list as neither team made the NCAA Tournament.
