A day of firsts in NASCAR
For the first time in its 75-year existence, NASCAR had a street race. The race took place in soggy Chicago. And for the first time in 60 years — since Johnny Rutherford in 1963 — a driver won in his first NASCAR race. And this was not just any driver. Shane van Gisbergen is from New Zealand. He was driving a car as part of a program by a team owned partially by entertainer Pitbull. Van Gisbergen is renowned in Australia and New Zealand. He qualified third and powered to victory late in the race.
