Yellowjackets report: Hill has hat trick as UWS pulls away

Oct. 21—Wisconsin-Superior's offense snapped to attention quickly in the second half, generating four goals in 13 minutes of the second half as the Yellowjackets women's soccer team won going away, 5-1, in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference game at Martin Luther in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play on Saturday, Oct. 21 in New Ulm, Minnesota.

UWS built a 1-0 halftime lead on Niya Wilson's goal in the 34th minute, but that was all until Mya Holmquist doubled the advantage in the 59th minute. The Yellowjackets then unleashed Kamryn Hill, and the midfielder from Duluth Denfeld notched a natural hat trick in the space of less than 10 minutes to put the win away.

UWS generated 25 shot attempts, putting 16 of them on frame, while Martin Luther was held to five attempts, four on target, breaking the shutout on a 78th-minute penalty kick.

The Yellowjackets (12-5-1, 11-2 UMAC) will travel to Menomonie, Wisconsin for nonconference game at Wisconsin-Stout on Tuesday, Oct. 24.

Wisconsin-Superior peppered the home net with 41 shot attempts, with Phillip Eriksen scoring twice in a 3-0 UMAC win at Martin Luther on Saturday, Oct. 12 in New Ulm, Minnesota.

The Yellowjackets put 28 of their 41 shot attempts on goal, forcing MLC goalies Adam Rosenbaum and Zachary Pausma to make 25 saves.

Felipe Oliveira gave UWS the lead in the 23rd minute, while Eriksen finished it off with goals in the 42nd and 54th minutes.

Patrick Sessions made three saves in the UWS net before yielding to Daniel Young.

UWS (13-3-2, 11-1 UMAC) will host Northland on Tuesday, Oct. 24 in Superior and can clinch the conference regular-season championship with a win.

No. 4-ranked Northwestern hasn't lost a set in UMAC play in two years and wasn't about to start on Saturday, Oct. 21, sweeping Wisconsin-Superior 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-20) on Saturday, Oct. 21 in St. Paul.

UWS entered the match on a six-match win streak but was quickly stripped of that momentum, as they were held to just four kills in the first set and a negative hitting percentage. Things got a little better in the next two sets, but UWS was still second-best against an Eagles team that hit .261 for the match, served nine aces and had 43 kills to the Yellowjackets' 25.

Emma Crandell posted six kills for UWS, while Kaylin Plautz and Maiana Stark added five apiece. Lizzy Schmidt (11 assists) and Colleen Claude (nine) handled the second ball on Saturday, while Jenna Anderson was the team's dig leader with 18.

UWS (15-8, 7-3 UMAC) will have a nonconference game back in St. Paul at Hamline on Tuesday.
