Yellow Jacket wrestling has historic signing day

Apr. 22—THOMASVILLE — Big things are happening at Thomas County Central as the wrestling program had a truly historic day. Seven Yellow Jacket wrestlers signed on to wrestle at the collegiate level. It is the most to sign at one time in program history and comes mere months after the football program's historic signing day.

"It's big. In all of the places I've been I've never seen seven guys sign to wrestle in college," said Central wrestling coach Matt Tanner. "But, not only that, it's huge for our school and our program and a testament to the hard work that these guys have put it, staying true to their goals and finding a way to make it happen. It's always good when you graduate high school with a plan and part of that plan it paid for."

Each of the three universities represented will welcome multiple Yellow Jackets in the fall. Micah Wood and Tommy Hires are headed to Huntingdon College, while Armando Perales, Rodney Edwards and Mason Brown will hit the mat for Andrew College. Logan Ward and Jaxon Ward will be attending the University of Montevallo.

Coach Tanner has been with the Central wrestling program for eight years and has spent a lot of time with these seven seniors. The most veteran wrestler has been involved with the program for six years.

"I've been with these guys longer than I've been with my little boy," Tanner said. "These guys were here when I had my son and carried him around the mats and things like that. So, they're family to me so to be able to see all of them have an opportunity to go continue doing what they've learned to love to do is awesome."
