The Yankees’ offense went silent Tuesday night, amassing just one run on four hits in their 4-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Takeaways

Domingo German was on the mound for the first time this season and it started odd. After getting Trea Turner to pop out on the first pitch, Kyle Schwarber hit his first homer of the year on a first-pitch fastball over the middle of the plate. He recovered by getting the next two batters to strike out.

German would coast until the third inning when he gave up another solo shot, this time to Brandon Marsh. The Phillies entered Tuesday’s game with just one home run through their first four games.

German was very effective, but he was clearly on a pitch count. In the fifth, after he got the first out and gave up a single, German got the groundball he needed to get out of the inning, but Anthony Volpe bobbled it and had to settle for a force out at second base.

Michael King came in for relief and gave up back-to-back singles to Turner and Schwarber to push the Phillies’ lead to 4-0.

German’s final line was 4.2 innings, four hits, four earned runs, no walks and eight strikeouts on 75 pitches. His performance was much better than his line showed with his only two mistakes being the pair of solo shots.

- It wasn't the Yankees offense's night Tuesday. Despite a few good shots from DJ LeMahieu, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, the Yankees could not get runs against starter Matt Strahm and the Phillies bullpen.

Volpe picked up the team's first hit, a single in his first at-bat. The prospect went just 1-for-3 with a strikeout on the night.

Gleyber Torres picked up the team's second hit in the bottom of the seventh inning. Along with his hit, Torres had a walk and ended the night 1-for-2.

-Isaiah Kiner-Falefa made his second start in center field on Tuesday. He made all the routine plays, but in the eighth, he laid out trying to steal a hit from Bryson Stott but came up short. He went 0-for-3 at the plate.

-Aaron Hicks made his second start of the season and went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and, expectedly, the Yankee Stadium crowd were not kind to him.

- In the ninth inning, the Yankees would attempt a comeback. With Craig Kimbrel on the mound, LeMahieu hit a one-out solo shot to center field to give the Yankees their first run of the game. It was LeMahieu's first home run since last Aug. 7 against the Cardinals. It is also the 10th home run of the Yankees' season so far.

Judge walked and, after a Torres fly out, Stanton picked up the Yankees' fourth hit of the game, an opposite-field single. With two outs, Josh Donaldson came up as the tying run. The former MVP would pop out to first base, ending the threat as the Yanks fell 4-1.
