Will the Yankees play today? 'We're a go' Aaron Boone says of Thursday doubleheader

NEW YORK - The city is under an "Air Quality Alert'' until midnight, but current conditions at Yankee Stadium are satisfactory enough Thursday to play a doubleheader.

"I wasn't sure, just obviously based on (Wednesday)...but we're a go,'' said Yankees manager Aaron Boone, following a noon conference call with Major League Baseball officials.

As a makeup for Wednesday's postponement of the New York Yankees-Chicago White Sox game, the two teams are scheduled for a single-admission doubleheader starting at 4:05 p.m.

The Bronx atmosphere took on an eerie, reddish quality midafternoon Wednesday from the Canadian wildfires that have impacted the air quality in the Metropolitan area and over large swaths of the region - causing postponements of many outdoor events and some warnings to remain indoors.

"We’re expecting to play and that’s how we’re going forward right now,'' Boone said about three hours before the scheduled first pitch Thursday.

Twenty-four hours earlier, Boone was "taken aback'' by the smoky, hazy conditions that led to Wednesday's postponement.

"When you hear fires in Quebec are affecting our games, it’s definitely a little odd,'' said Boone. "But you have things that come up. (Wednesday), in a lot of ways, works akin to a rainout. But definitely bizarre.''

Boone said the Yankees intended to stay "vigilant'' on health concerns given the poor air quality, "more so than normal'' with regard to monitoring his players and things like staying hydrated.

This is the White Sox's only scheduled regular-season appearance this year at Yankee Stadium. Major League Baseball has the ultimate final say in whether games are played or postponed in such instances.

The Yankees have posted their lineup for Game 1. Here it is:
