The Yankees placed RHP Domingo Germán on the restricted list Wednesday.

"Domingo Germán has agreed today to voluntarily submit to inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse," the Yankees' statement read. "He will be placed on the Restricted List for the time that he is away from the club.

"It is critical that Domingo completely focuses on addressing his health and well-being. We will respect his privacy as he begins this process."

Germán, 30, is 5-7 with a 5.46 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in 20 games (19 starts) this season.

"It's something that he's had to deal with in the past," GM Brian Cashman said in a news conference before Wednesday's 7:05 p.m. game against the Tampa Bay Rays. "So the recent situation emerged yesterday."

"I'm not going to go through the details of it other than I think the statement will stand for itself and it's a very serious issue that affects way too many people, unfortunately," Cashman added when asked about what Germán told him. "Hopefully, the steps that are being taken today will really benefit him for the remaining part of his life because it's a very serious problem that you need to address head on, and these treatment places are significant steps -- hopefully -- towards helping him get the tools to solve it."

Cashman said that he does not expect Germán back with the Yankees this season.

"He's on the restricted list, do not expect him back this year and he's dealing with the most important issues right in front of him now," Cashman said. "But you're not going to see him pitch this year for us."

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that he was not able to speak with Germán Wednesday.

"I just know he's going through treatment," Boone said after New York's 7-2 win over Tampa Bay. "Want the best for the person that's going through a difficult time."
