Yankees on Deck: Jasson Dominguez's home debut and Derek Jeter's first Old-Timers' Day

NEW YORK - At the prices they’re charging at Yankee Stadium, it’s beyond disappointing to see September arrive in the Bronx with virtually no hope of October baseball.

But at least this team arrives home with some promise for the future - something to keep your interest until the NFL consumes all attention.

Coming off a successful first three MLB games in the Yankees’ sweep at Houston, ‘The Martian’ lands at the Stadium.

Beginning with Tuesday night’s series opener against the Detroit Tigers, switch-hitting Jasson Dominguez will have his Bronx introduction – a chance to further win over the fans while auditioning for the regular center field job in 2024.

It’ll mostly be a kids show for these final 12 home games, with shortstop Anthony Volpe finishing strong and the Yanks getting more looks at infielder Oswald Peraza, outfielder Everson Pereira and catcher Austin Wells.

Derek Jeter headlines Old-Timer's Day

Nine years after his retirement from baseball, Derek Jeter will be making his first appearance at Old Timers' Day at Yankee Stadium this Saturday afternoon.

It's the 75th Yankees Old-Timers' Day ceremony, and they'll be honoring the 25th anniversary of the 1998 world champions prior to the scheduled 2 p.m. game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Many of Jeter's '98 world champion teammates are due to attend, including Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera, David Cone, Darryl Strawberry, Tim Raines, Scott Brosius, Tino Martinez, David Wells, Paul O'Neill and manager Joe Torre.

Gates open to ticket holders at 11:30 a.m. and fans are asked to be seated by noon for the ceremonies.

But those hoping for the traditional Old-Timers' game will be disappointed again. A question-and-answer session led by Yankees broadcasters will take place after the introductions.

Miguel Cabrera's Bronx farewell

This week at the Stadium, Detroit Tigers' slugger Miguel Cabrera is taking his final bows as an active player.

A lock Hall-of-Famer, Cabrera is retiring at season's end, 20 years after breaking in with the Florida Marlins and winning a World Series ring at the Yankees' expense in 2003.

In 44 career regular season games in the Bronx - six at the previous Yankee Stadium, 38 at the new ballpark - Cabrera is a .322 hitter (49-for-152) with 12 homers and 29 RBI according to Baseball-Reference.com.

Probable pitchers, Tigers-Yankees series

Tuesday, 7:05 p.m., YES: TBA vs. RHP Gerrit Cole (12-4, 2.95).

Wednesday, 7:05 p.m., YES: RHP Matt Manning (5-4, 3.62) vs. RHP Clarke Schmidt (8-8, 4.56).

Thursday, 7:05 p.m., YES: LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (10-7, 3.11) vs. LHP Carlos Rodon (2-4, 5.70).

Bottom line: Cole’s bid for his first Cy Young Award continues against the Tigers, a team he defeated last Wednesday in Detroit.

In that start, Cole pitched six innings and gave up two runs on four hits, including home runs by Jake Rogers and Spencer Torkelson.

Cole, who turns 33 on Friday, has yielded two runs or fewer in 21 of his 28 starts this season. He'll likely be caught by Ben Rortvedt instead of Wells, with manager Aaron Boone having acknowledged the probability of keeping that pairing going.

Schmidt took a no-decision last Thursday at Detroit, with Manning tossing six scoreless innings in the Tigers’ 4-3, 10-inning win.

Rodon got the win last Friday at Houston in Wells’ big league catching debut, yielding two runs over five innings. The veteran lefty Rodriguez beat the White Sox in his last start, Friday, allowing one run over 6.2 innings.

Giancarlo Stanton milestone in reach

Sitting on 399 career home runs, Giancarlo Stanton is seeking to become the fourth fastest MLB player to reach the 400 Home Run Club in terms of games played.

With his next home run, Stanton would become the 58th player in MLB history to reach 400 homers and the 10th player to accomplish the feat as a Yankee - joining Mark Teixeira, Carlos Beltran, Alfonso Soriano, Alex Rodriguez, Gary Sheffield, Reggie Jackson, Mickey Mantle, Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth.

Last Friday at Houston, Aaron Judge became the fastest MLB player to reach 250 career home runs (810 games), connecting off Justin Verlander in a 6-2 Yankees win.

In that same game, Dominguez homered in his first MLB at-bat.
