Yankees catcher Jose Trevino is out for season, needs wrist surgery. Ben Rortvedt is up

NEW YORK — Yankees catcher Jose Trevino's season has come to an abrupt end, due to a torn ligament in his right wrist, requiring surgery.

A first-time AL All-Star and Gold Glove winner last season, Trevino's playing time had diminished in recent weeks, essentially splitting time with Kyle Higashioka.

Before Friday's game at Yankee Stadium against the Kansas City Royals, Trevino, a John Paul II grad, was placed on the 10-day injury list, and he told reporters he expected to be ready in time for spring training.

Trevino revealed he's been managing a wrist issue since spring training, and a re-evaluation took place when the Yankees returned home Thursday from a 1-5 road trip to start the post-All-Star break.

"I knew at some point that it was going to come to a point where I couldn’t take the pain anymore,'' Trevino told reporters, including MLB.com.

"I will say, the training staff and strength coaches did everything they could to get me right every time I was out on the field. It’s just tough to play through that kind of stuff.”

The Yankees have called up catcher Ben Rortvedt from Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to replace Trevino on the roster and share time with Higashioka.

Also on Friday, the Yankees promoted catching prospect Austin Wells to Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre from Class AA Somerset.

Trevino batted just .210 with a .570 OPS in 55 games this year.

Prior to Trevino's IL stint, the Yankees were linked to interest in the catching market leading up to the Aug. 1 MLB trade deadline, with Chicago Cubs' veteran Yan Gomes as a potential candidate to be moved in the coming days.

On Thursday, the Yankees signed right-hander Matt Bowman to a big-league contract and transferred veteran third baseman Josh Donaldson (calf strain) to the 60-day IL, suggesting he could have played his last game in pinstripes.

Lefty-hitting outfielders Jake Bauers (Scranton) and Willie Calhoun (Somerset) were scheduled to begin minor league rehab assignments on Friday.

Also, manager Aaron Boone told reporters that Aaron Judge (sprianed right big toe) would bat against Jonathan Loaisiga (bone spur, right elbow) during the reliever's first live session since his injury, Sunday.

It would be a next-step progression in Judge's return, which still has no public timetable. He was injured on June 3.
