Wyoming 2016-17 Basketball Schedule Set

First year UW head coach Allen Edwards has the 2016-17 schedule set for his Cowboys in 2016-17. Wyoming will play home-home with every conference opponent except for San Diego State and Nevada, where they will play one game against each. The Cowboys will play Nevada at home, while traveling to San Diego State.

“The best part of our conference is how competitive it is,” Edwards said. “Every night a challenge is presented in this league and it will always be a competitive battle.”

The non-conference will include the Las Vegas Classic (Dec 22nd and 23rd) at the Orleans Arena with games against DePaul, USC or Missouri State, and the Pokes will face Cornell and Troy in home contests before the tournament moves to Las Vegas for two days.

The 2016-17 non-conference schedule includes home games with Northern Iowa (MW/MVC Classic), Denver, Montana, South Dakota State, along with Cornell and Troy. Road games at Cal, Pacific and Montana. Two games at home versus D2 opponents Western State and Colorado Christian.

“We are excited that our schedule is now completed. We have some real quality, NCAA Tournament teams coming to Laramie, which will be great for our fans,” said Edwards. “In addition, we are playing in a very competitive field of teams in the Las Vegas Classic against BCS programs, and as part of that event will be hosting our first two games in that tournament here in Laramie.

“I think our pre-conference schedule is good in the sense that it will prepare us well for our conference season. It will be a competitive non-conference schedule, but at the same time, it will give our team an opportunity to grow as we go into conference play.”

Edwards will lead his program into one exhibition game versus Chadron State in Torrington (Wyo.) with a chance for senior Jason McManamen to play in his hometown. The Pokes will also play a closed door scrimmage against a team to be named later.

“I have always said when the Arena-Auditorium is packed it is a very tough place to play,” Edwards said. “Our fans make for an exciting atmosphere and give us that competitive edge.”

Today's release represents the first phase in the 2016-17 men's basketball schedule process. Mountain West national television partners CBS Sports Network and ESPN will initiate a selection procedure which will include the shifting of Wednesday games to Tuesday and Saturday games to Sunday.

The national television selections should be completed by the middle of August. Regional partner ROOT SPORTS and the Mountain West Network on Campus Insiders will begin their picks after the national television lineup has been announced.
