Wrestling roundup: Paynesville goes 2-1 at its quadrangular

Feb. 9—PAYNESVILLE — After dropping the opening match, the Paynesville wrestling team finished strong with a 2-1 showing at the Paynesville Bulldog Quad on Friday.

The Bulldogs, ranked 10th in Class A, started the day with a 40-16 loss to No. 2 Holdingford. They followed up with a 60-3 win over Sibley East and a 34-27 victory against West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville.

In the finale against the Knights, Paynesville built a 15-0 lead. Jamison Meagher won by fall at 107 pounds, Roman Roberg won by decision at 114 and Mason McNab had a first-period fall at 121.

Braydon Kierstead-Hahn had a major decision at 133, followed by a fall from Mason Hanson at 139 to boost the Bulldogs' lead to 25-6.

Brandon Hess (152), Seth Vearrier (189) and Peyton Hemmesch (215) all picked up decisions that helped ensure the dual victory for Paynesville.

The Bulldogs now prepare for the Section 5A team tournament. Seeds are yet to be announced. First-round matches get underway on Thursday. The semifinals and championship are set for Saturday, Feb. 17 at Minneota.

Ten of Paynesville's 12 wins came with bonus points as the Bulldogs beat Sibley East at Paynesville.

Grant Wendlandt (172 pounds) and Peyton Hemmesch (189) were both winners by fall for Paynesville. Jamison Meagher (107), Mason McNab (127) and Mitchell Blonigen (152) each finished with major decisions. The Bulldogs also won four matches by forfeit.

Holdingford recorded pins from Masyn Patrick at 139 pounds, Drew Lange at 160 and Luke Bieniek at 172 on its way to the victory over host Paynesville.

The Huskers are ranked third in Class A while the Bulldogs are 11th.

At 215, Holdingford's Jaxon Bartkowicz used a near-fall in the second period to edge the Bulldogs' Peyton Hemmesch in a 4-1 decision. Hemmesch is ranked third at 189 and Bartkowicz is third at 215.

Winners for the Bulldogs were Jamison Meagher at 107, Roman Roberg at 114, Braydon Kierstead-Hahn at 133 and Seth Vearrier at 189,

Thanks to a trio of champions, New London-Spicer won the Albany Purple Pride Invite.

The Wildcats finished with 199 points. That beat Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus' 186 and Hutchinson/Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart's 179.

Andrew Sandau (107 pounds), Isaiah Nelson (133) and Caleb Nelson (145) all finished in first for NLS. And they all beat Hutchinson/BLHS wrestlers to claim their respective brackets.

Sandau finished 3-0, including a 2-1 decision over Judah Perrault in the 107 finals. Isaiah was also 3-0 with a 4-2 decision over Max Martin. Caleb was the 145 champion with a 2-0 record, which included a 11-3 major decision over Cody Tews.

Brody Duke (172), Garret Leenstra (215) and Marshel Johnson (285) placed second for the Wildcats.

BOLD's Austin Kiecker was the 152-pound champion at the Springfield Tiger Invitational.

The Warriors placed fifth with 83.5 points. Norwood Young America was the team champion with 218, followed by Luverne's 166 and St. Clair/Mankato Loyola's 163.5.

Kiecker finished 3-0, including back-to-back first-period falls in the quarterfinals and semifinals. In the championship, Kiecker won a 20-5 tech fall over Wabasso's Gavin Marotzke.

Keaton Marwede added a second-place finish for BOLD at 107.

BOLD's Ava Kiecker, Benson's Halle Bolduc and Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa's Elizabeth Rademacher remain in the hunt for section championships after Day 1 of the Section 5/7 girls individual tournament at Bemidji.

Kiecker, an eighth-grader, went 3-0 in the 112-pound bracket. After pinning Cambridge-Isanti's Ashlynn Bondeson and Park Center's Lily Helgeson, Kiecker reached the semifinals with a 4-2 decision against Royalton/Upsala's Maya Olson.

Bolduc, a freshman, made the 136 semis after going 2-0. She opened with a fall on Mora's Ava Showers, followed by a 2-0 decision over Pine City/Hinckley-Finlayson's Addison Blaiser.

After getting a first-round bye, Rademacher, an eighth-grader, pinned Milaca's Margaret Barnes to make the 124 semis.

Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg's Adamaris Chable Rodriguez is in the consolation bracket at 155.

The tournament continues at 9:30 a.m. Saturday back at Bemidji.

Willmar junior Selah Martinez is in the consolation bracket at 124 pounds at the Section 6/8 individual girls tournament at Bemidji.

Martinez opened the tournament with a fall over Ottertail Central's Ella Rich in 2 minutes, 48 seconds. She took a loss to Monticello's Jaime Bayliss in 2:26 in the next round.

Looking to stay alive, Martinez won a 6-1 overtime decision over Thief River Falls' Molly Ferguson. That was followed up by back-to-back falls over Osakis' Victoria Neuman at 1:04 and Brainerd's Brooklyn Olson at 1:34.
