Wrestling roundup: Memorable night for KMS soph

Jan. 18—GROVE CITY — It was a special night for Trey Gunderson as the Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg wrestling team went 1-1 in the Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City quadrangular on Thursday.

Gunderson, a sophomore, reached 100 career falls for the Fighting Saints. The former state champion, who ranks No. 1 in Class A among 133-pound competitors, won both of his matches.

Sporting a black eye under a black mask, Gunderson earned the 99th pin of his career against Norwood Young America's Nick Ojeda in 3 minutes, 45 seconds. His 100th came against ACGC's Luke Garvick in 3:32.Cole Froehlich (121), Taytan Nielsen (145), Jett Olson (160) and Aaron Jones (172) each went 2-0 for KMS.

ACGC was 1-2 overall, beating Benson 58-9 and losing to KMS 45-20 and NYA 33-29.

The Falcons' Isaiah Renne, who is wrestling at 189 and ranks No. 7 in Class A, finished the quad with a 3-0 record. All three wins were pins.

Brody Straumann also went 3-0 at 160 for the Falcons. Edwyn Gonzalez, who ranks No. 7 in Class A at 133, was 2-0.

Luke Garvick had a major decision win against Benson's Mu Tah Wah as Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City cruised past Benson at Grove City.

285: Juan Cardenas, ACGC, dec Johnny Kobbermann, 10-7

Up 30-29 going into the 285-pound match, Norwood Young America's Grant Erickson won a 2-1 decision to put the Raiders over Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City in Grove City.

Joseph Sherwood (139), Brody Straumann (160), Ethan Whitcomb (172) and Isaiah Renne (215) won by fall for the Falcons. Edwyn Gonzalez added a tech fall at 133.

285: Grant Erickson, NYA, dec. Juan Cardenas, 2-1

A pair of falls at 215 and 285 pounds cemented a win for Norwood Young America against Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg at Grove City.

Both the Raiders and Fighting Saints are in the Class A Lean and Mean rankings.

Four KMS wrestlers — Cole Froehlich (121 pounds), Trey Gunderson (133), Jett Olson (160) and Aaron Jones (189) — won by fall.

Isaac Mergen (133 pounds), Mason Hansen (139), Mitchell Blonigen (145), Brandon Hess (152), Grant Wendlandt (160), Daniel Flint (172), Preyton Hemmesch (189) and Sam Brick (215) all scored pins for Paynesville in a victory against Quad County at Paynesville.

Paynesville scored six points in all nine of its victories against BOLD in Paynesville.

The Bulldogs' Devon Schmidt (114 pounds), Mason McNab (121), Isaac Mergen (127), Nicholas Utsch (133), Preston Welling (139), Daniel Flint (172) and Grant Miller (285) were all winners by fall.

Austin Kiecker (152) and Hayden Edwards (215) earned falls for the Warriors.

Paynesville finished up its home quadrangular with a victory over Osakis.

Devon Schmidt (114 pounds), Isaac Mergen (127), Mitchell Blonigen (145), Grant Wendlandt (172), Peyton Hemmesch (215) and Kevin Raya-Botello (285) each got pins for the Bulldogs against the Silverstreaks.

Mario Gradillas' major decision at 114 pounds highlighted Quad County's winning effort against BOLD at Paynesville.

Also earning wins by fall for Quad County were Owen Cherveny (160), Jacob Savig (189) and Jasen Jansen (285).

Keaton Marwede earned an overtime victory over Kellan George at 121 pounds in BOLD's loss to Osakis at Paynesville.

Also earning wins for BOLD: Edgar Kopel (107 pounds), Brady Kiecker (145), Austin Kiecker (152) and Hayden Edwards (215).

Carson McCain earned a tech fall against Zander Plath in New London-Spicer's decisive victory against Glencoe-Silver Lake at Glencoe.

Elden Halvorson (114 pounds), Carson Nelson (121), Holton Hanson (139) and Everett Halvorson (152) all scored falls for the Wildcats.

NLS hosts an invitational starting at 3:30 p.m. Friday in New London. Teams slated to compete are Albany, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, Eden Valley-Watkins, Glencoe-Silver Lake, Kimball, Ortonville, Pierz, Pipestone and Sartell.

New London-Spicer won five straight matches from 133 to 160 pounds, helping set the tone for a win over Watertown-Mayer at Glencoe.

Isaiah Nelson won by fall at 133 pounds for the Wildcats.

Carson McCain (189 pounds) and Marshel Johnson (285) won by fall for New London-Spicer in a victory against Delano at Glencoe.

Three wrestlers from West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville won by fall in a victory over Minnewaska at Evansville.

Miles Wildman (114 pounds) and Cole Kittleson (172) all scored falls for the Lakers.

Minnewaska heads to Thief River Falls for an invitational at 10 a.m. Saturday.
