Wrestling: Reading goes 2-0 in Wednesday night duals, Hillsdale goes 1-1 in LCAA quad

HILLSDALE COUNTY — After getting back to action in Week 5, Hillsdale County wrestling teams endured tough league duals on Wednesday night to give each team a look at where they stand heading into the toughest part of their seasons.

The Jonesville wrestling team traveled to Hanover-Horton for a Cascades Conference Quad. Reading traveled to Maple Valley for a quad that included matches against Quincy and Harper Creek. Hillsdale hosted the LCAA for a quad meet that included duals against Madison and Onsted.

Reading's momentum continues with two more dual wins

The Rangers got back to business after a second-place finish at the Homer Invitational over the weekend with two more dual wins at Maple Valley. This included a thrilling finish against Quincy in a 36-35 victory and a 48-31 victory over Harper Creek.

Starting with the Quincy dual, the Rangers lost their first four matches of the night from 120 to 138, but the Rangers had a total of six pins in the Big 8 matchup to defeat the Orioles. This included three-straight in the 175-215-pound weight classes.

Earning wins for the Rangers were Gavin Wright (144), Jeremiah Bedford (150), Connar Rudy (175), Lukas Strine (190), Isaac Westfall (215) and Reid Westfall (113). All six athletes had pins, with the quickest being Reid Westfall who got the win just 32 seconds into his matchup. Ranger Caiden Baker lost a 5-3 decision to Micha Paul of Quincy at 157.

The Rangers also made big strides as a unit against Harper Creek, with six more athletes earning pins in the 48-31 final point tally. Jeremiah Bedford got things started for the Rangers with a pinfall win after just 50 seconds, the second-fastest of the dual. Baker earned a pinfall. Rudy earned a pinfall. Strine earned a pinfall. Isaac Westfall and Austin Neely (215) both earned void wins. Reid Westfall (wrestling at 106 in this match) earned a pin. Dylan McCallister (113) earned a pinfall. Gavin Wright lost a close match 5-3 against Cmari Hampton of Harper Creek.

Comets look to improve in Cascades play

Second dual against Hanover-Horton to be updated online when available

The Comets have had a successful start to their transition from Big 8 to Cascades conference wrestling this season. This week, the Comets headed to Hanover-Horton for a quad dual that also included a matchup with Napoleon.

The Comets lost to Napoleon in a 48-28 final point tally. The Pirates won the first three matches of the dual from weight classes 106 to 120. The Comets got their first win of the night with a win from Randall Kast via pinfall (126). Carson Playford (138) won via a 10-2 major decision. The Comets' next win would be Jordan VanSickle (175) with a pinfall. The Comets closed out the dual with pinfall wins from Evan McColley (215) and Cooper Stevens (285).

Hillsdale beats Onsted, loses to Adrian Madison in LCAA action

The Hornets and coach Nate Spieth hosted the LCAA for a quad league meet. The Hornets one their dual against Onsted 54-21 and lost to Madison 60-22.

The Hornets won six straight matches from 165 to 113. This included pinfall wins from Declan Flannery (165), Robert Garcia (175), Stephen Petersen (190), John Petersen (215), Wyatt Wahtola (285) and Oliver Heckel (106). Luke Webster (113) defeated Chris Coesens of Onsted via a disqualification. Garcia's pinfall came just 21 seconds into his match.

Colton Wolf (126) won via a 6-1 decision over Onsted's Ricardo Martinez. Ethan Wolf (132) won via pinfall. Miles Brown (144) defeated Teagan Cunningham of Onsted via a 10-8 decision.

The Hornets had a tougher outing against LCAA newcomer Adrian Madison. The Hornets got pinfalls wins from Garcia and Stephen Petersen. John Petersen had a void win. Ethan Wolf won via major decision in a final score of 8-0. Madison had 10 pinfall wins to dominate the dual.

Upcoming Events

The Hornets will travel to Dansville this Saturday in an Invitational appearance. Jonesville will travel to Chelsea to participate in the annual Kargel Klassic Team Tournament. Wrestling events start at 9 a.m.
