World Series of Asphalt 2023: Takeaways from Night 1 at New Smyrna Speedway

Opening night for the 2023 edition of the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Speedway was a race against the rain.

Unfortunately for everyone involved, Mother Nature ended up winning the evening after just one feature. Rain forced track officials at New Smyrna to cancel the remainder of on-track activities, wiping out planned races for the Super Late Model, Pro Late Model, Florida Modified and Bomber A divisions.

Derek Griffith, a two-time Super Late Model champion in the World Series of Asphalt, claimed Friday’s lone victory in the 35-lap Sportsman feature. He started the race from the pole and did not face any pressure as he added another Word Series of Asphalt accomplishment to his resume.

Kody Brusso charged through the field after starting on the third row and finished second behind Griffith. Time Sozio placed third, with Adam Briggs and Danny Frye completing the top-five finishers.

A busy day of racing is ahead for the World Series of Asphalt on Saturday, with the 200-lap NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event serving as the headliner on a docket that consists of Pro Late Model, Sportsman, Bomber A and Florida Modified features.
