Find out who won Daily Leader Athlete of the Week for May 27-June 8

The 2023-24 prep sports season has come to an end with Pontiac claiming the Class 3A state softball championship. This run allowed for a number of diamond girls to be listed as candidates for the top athlete, which included the final two weeks of the season for May 27-June 8.

Prevailing by a very wide margin was Tessa Collins of the Pontiac softball team as she is the last to be voted the Pontiac Daily Leader's Athlete of the Week for the school year.

Collins came through with what the game-winner base hit as PTHS rallied in the bottom of the seventh to defeat East Peoria in a Class 3A sectional semifinal game in Washington on May 28. She scored seven runs in the sectional, supersectional and two finals games.

Collins brought in 1,330 votes, which was 76.79 percent of the overall total on the Athlete of the Week poll this week. Cadence Helms of Pontiac came in second with 220 votes (12.7 percent), while Riley Weber of Pontiac placed third with 62 (3.58 percent) votes. There were 1,732 votes cast.

Tyler Curl of Prairie Central, and Maddie Gourley and Elena Krause of Pontiac.

Each week during the school year, we nominate a group of stars and you get to go and vote in our poll. The next voting period will be in August at the beginning of the 2024-25 school year.
