Women's FA Cup final LIVE!

Manchester United lifted the Women's FA Cup for the first time in their history following a comfortable 4-0 victory over Tottenham at Wembley. Ella Toone, who started when United were narrowly beaten by Chelsea in the final a year ago, broke the deadlock with a fine finish in first-half stoppage time.

Rachel Williams, appearing in her fourth FA Cup final, nodded home nine minutes after the restart before an error by Spurs keeper Becky Spencer gifted Lucia Garcia her first goal three minutes later. Captain Bethany England came closest for Tottenham in their maiden FA Cup final with a crossbar-clipping header before Garcia bagged her brace and put the comeback firmly out of reach.

It is the first time since Birmingham's victory in 2012 - where Williams netted a crucial stoppage-time equaliser for the winners - that the cup hasn't been won by one of Arsenal, Chelsea or Manchester City.

Tottenham boss Robert Vilahamn has insisted he will be look back on today’s final with huge pride, regardless of the result.

"I remember as a kid, that stadium was the biggest one I knew and so it was my dream to get there one day,” the 41-year-old said.

"I’ve been working pretty much for 30 years to get to this stadium, so it’s more like enjoying the ride. The feelings I get with that is of course a mixture of stress and happiness.

"But I’m more looking forward to the game and hopefully we will win. If we lose I will be very upset but I know a few weeks after that I will still be very proud of what we have done, so it’s a good feeling."

Marc Skinner has urged his side to use last season’s final defeat as added motivation this afternoon.

Man United were beaten 1-0 by Chelsea at Wembley in the showpiece event 12 months ago, and now look to go one better.

"It has to, it has to feed into it," Skinner said. "When the hurt hits, you feel it and you can recall it, it can be an extra drive and motivating factor.

"That’s how you have to use it. You have to bring back those feelings and give more. Nobody is guaranteed to win this final but we have to give everything to make sure the performance is worthy of it.

"You would be a fool to go in and feel super confident that you will walk this final. Tottenham are a very, very good team. On their day, they can beat anyone in this league.”

Spurs bid to one-club ethos

Last summer, when Spurs chairman Daniel Levy was deciding what type of manager was needed to take the men’s club forward, a similar conversation was taking place between the powerbrokers of the women’s team, who were also searching for a new boss.

Andy Rogers, managing director of Spurs Women, sat down with the club’s academy director Simon Davies to work out how they could align the teams.

“We wanted to understand, ‘How do we want to play?’, with a one-club mentality at the top of everything,” said Rogers. “So, ‘What’s the vision for the men’s team?’ and we should try to align the women’s team similarly.”

Vilahamn was a risky choice to lead the new project, having spent just three seasons as a top-level coach in his native Sweden and a year in the women’s game.

But the 41-year-old has quickly turned Spurs into a slick, modern team, with Martha Thomas’s outstanding winner in the 1-0 win over Arsenal in December the best example of their brave football.
