Wisconsin women's basketball secures WNIT berth for first postseason appearance in 13 years

MADISON - The Wisconsin women’s basketball team cleared another hurdle in its development Sunday.

it earned a spot in the postseason.

The Badgers were one of 48 teams selected for the WNIT. The bracket for the tournament will be unveiled Monday, but first-round games will be played Wednesday-Friday at campus locations.

The last time Wisconsin played in a postseason national tournament was 2010-11 when it had an two-game run in the WNIT that began with a win over Butler and ended with a loss to Illinois State. The Badgers finished 18-15 that season.

The team is 13-16 this season, giving it the minimum number of victories required for the field.

This marks the first season there are three national postseason tournaments for women’s basketball.

The NCAA Tournament had the first pick of teams for its 68-team field. Next was the newly created Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament (WBIT) that took 32 teams followed by the WNIT.

Wisconsin is joined in the WNIT field by Purdue and Minnesota.

In all, 12 Big Ten teams are playing in the postseason. Ohio State, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan State, Nebraska, Michigan and Maryland qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Illinois and Penn State made the WBIT field.
