Winter notebook: Killingly wrestling extends school record win streak

Week 6 of the winter season featured a number of highlights and top performances.

In wrestling, Killingly extended a school record 54 dual match winning streak while winning the Shoreline Duals at Branford High School and Norwich Free Academy rolled to four victories to win the annual Carl Snitkin Memorial Duals at Alumni Gymnasium in Norwich.

The Ellis Tech girls basketball team, who reached the finals of the CTC tournament a year ago, improved to 11-2 with victories over Prince Tech and Norwich Tech.

And the Norwich Free Academy girls basketball team defeated Woodstock Academy and Killingly to raise their won-lost mark to 8-5.

Here are the highlights and top performances from Week 6:

Boys basketball

Armanee Davis poured in 23 points and Ethan Graham scored 19 points to lead Norwich Free Academy to an 88-77 non-league victory over E.O. Smith. Keegan Johnston had 11 points, while Kody Jamieson chipped in nine points for the Wildcats (4-5).

Connor McRae made five 3-pointers and finished with 25 points to lift Norwich Tech to a 66-60 non-league win over Tourtellotte. Daniel Hess collected 18 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, while  Wyatt Quint added eight points and nine rebounds for the Warriors (3-7).

McRae also had 11 points, four rebounds, and four assists, Aidan Lewis scored 10 points, and Hess added nine points in the Warriors’ 58-44 loss against Coventry.

Johnny Kazantzis posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Killingly to a 57-50 victory over Wheeler. Quinn Sumner had 16 points and seven rebounds, Quin Crowley added 14 points, while Ashton Goodwin chipped in five points and seven rebounds for Killingly (4-6).

Carmelo Curtis made five 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 17 points and Kinkade Rubino scored 15 points and dished out nine assists to lift Griswold past Tourtellotte, 66-59. Kaiden Kazlauskas had 13 points and Kolby Mills added 12 points for the ECC Division III leading Wolverines (6-4).

Girls basketball

Kylie Damble collected 15 points, four assists, and three rebounds as Ellis Tech improved to 11-2 with a 49-35 victory over Prince Tech. Rose Lopez posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Sadie Murray added 11 points, nine rebounds and four steals for the Golden Eagles.

Ellis Tech also topped CTC rival Norwich Tech, 63-38, behind Lopez (19 points), Kiara Cartier (14 points), and Damble (12 points). Autumn Hanks and Maya Stimson each had 10 points for the Warriors.

Emily Orcutt scored 16 points to lift Norwich Free Academy past Woodstock Academy, 41-37. Nevaeh Yorke added nine points for the Wildcats (8-5).

Orcutt also had 11 points, while Petra Berry scored 10 points in NFA’s 45-29 win over Killingly.

Arianha Headen scored 13 points, while Laura Farquhar contributed nine points but Killingly fell to Woodstock Academy, 51-36.

Killingly defeated St. Bernard 58-41. Farquhar scored all 14 of her points in the third quarter to spark a decisive 28-7 run. Headen had a team-high 17 points, Sydney Crabtree added 13 points, while Grace Sumner chipped in with eight points for Killingly (6-6).

Natalie Becotte scored 16 points and Abby Matheson added 12 points to lead Griswold to a 46-23 win over Putnam.

Wrestling

Killingly extended a school record 54-match winning streak by defeating Newington, 72-6; Fairfield Prep, 54-19; Morgan, 84-0; and Bristol Eastern, 46-27, to win the Shoreline Duals at Branford High School.

Killingly (24-0), which is ranked No. 8 in the state, got four wins apiece from Bradey Jonasch, Max Richardson, Ian Cathell, Brady Zadora, Aiden Mantia, Exael Padilla, and Soren Rief, while Anthony Oates and Darin Exarhoulias went a combined 4-0 in the heavyweight divisions.

Earlier in the week, Bradey Jonasch, Max Richardson, Ian Cathell, Mason Connetti, Brady Zadora, Amani Samuel, Aiden Mantia, Giovanni Sanchez-Ruelas, Exael Padilla, and Ryan Barretta all recorded  pins in Killingly’s 66-16 win over Waterford.

Norwich Free Academy rolled to victories over Ledyard, 48-27; Staples, 58-15; Law, 81-0; and Notre Dame-West Haven, 48-31, to win the annual Carl Snitkin Memorial Duals at Alumni Gymnasium in Norwich.

The Wildcats (17-3) were led by Landon Herdic (106), Ed Lavoie (132), Dylan Vanegas (150), and Zaire Wallace (190), who each won four matches. Josh Cuevas (120), Jackson Sorel (126), Dugan Marsh (138), Logan Jenkins (175), and Rhys Surprenant (215) each won three matches for NFA.

Rylee Kenny (150) won four matches, while Seth Christie (113), Vincent Andreozzi (126), Russell Stewart (157) each won three matches as Griswold-Wheeler defeated Hand, 60-24; Montville, 54-22; and Haddam-Killingworth, 41-36. The Wolverines (13-5) fell short against Plainville, 38-36.

Gymnastics

Trinity Ambruso won the all-around for Norwich Free Academy (2-2, 2-2 Eastern Connecticut Conference) with a 37.15 total but the Wildcats finished behind Killingly, 135.95-130.65. NFA topped Woodstock Academy who finished with a 121.15 total.

Ella Pereira led Killingly (3-0, 3-0) with a 36.15 all-around total. Plainfield’s Brenna Johnson took third in the all-around with a 35.35.

Ambruso also placed first in the vault (9.45) and balance beam (9.4). Ellis Tech’s Jordyn Murray placed first in the uneven bars (9.4), while Pereira won the floor exercise (9.4).

Indoor Track

The Killingly Indoor Track and Field team competed at Providence in a 17-team battle royal.

On the girls side, Shanaya Brown finished second in the 55-meter dash.

For the Killingly boys, Jeremiah Smith placed first in the Long Jump with a personal best of 21 feet, while Everton Brown placed first in the 55-meter dash.
