Wimbledon 2023 LIVE: Carlos Alcaraz battles Matteo Berrettini after Novak Djokovic survives test

The match of the day at Wimbledon is a blockbuster clash between top seed Carlos Alcaraz and former runner-up Matteo Berrettini. Berrettini is enjoying a spectacular return to form two years on from reaching the Wimbledon final and the big-serving Italian will be a huge test of Alcaraz’s title ambitions.

Earlier, Novak Djokovic advanced to the Wimbledon quarter-finals after defeating Hubert Hurkacz in four sets upon the resumption of their fourth-round clash, while the shock of the day was produced by Christopher Eubanks as the unseeded American stunned Stefanos Tsitsipas in five sets.

Defending champion Elena Rybakina will face either Ons Jabeur in the quarter-finals in a rematch of last year’s final after the Tunisian beat Petra Kvitova in straight sets,

Mirra Andreeva’s run is over after defeat to Madison Keys in the fourth round, with the 16-year-old Russian qualifier refusing to shake hands with the umpire after a controversial end to the contest.

Wimbledon LIVE: Carlos Alcaraz vs Matteo Berrettini

17:38 , Mike Jones

The final match of the day on Centre Court is a beltin’ one. The World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz is taking on Italy’s Matteo Berrettini who is a big lover of grass court tennis.

On paper Alcaraz should have enough quality to get past the World No. 38 but it won’t be the easiest of victories for the Spaniard. Berrettini is a canny customer and will make things as difficult as possible.

Due to how quickly the previous matches on Centre Court have wrapped up today, there’s plenty of time for this one to be decided before the 11pm curfew.

If it goes on that long though we’re in for an absolute cracker.

Tension will be replaced by appreciation when Elina Svitolina takes on Iga Swiatek for a place in the Wimbledon semi-finals on Tuesday.

The All England Club can have barely heard a reaction like the chorus of booing that accompanied Victoria Azarenka off Court One following her narrow defeat by Svitolina on Sunday evening.

Ukrainian players refuse to shake hands with Russian or Belarusian opponents at the end of matches as a result of the invasion of their country and there has been significant locker room rancour about how the issue has affected tennis.

Ons Jabeur 6-0 6-3 Petra Kvitova

Game, set and match Ons Jabeur!

She’s skipping around court by the end of this match. It’s been a clinical dismantling of a two-time Wimbledon champion by Ons Jabeur.

The Tunisian claims three set points and flies into the quarter-finals in seriously impressive fashion. Petra Kvitova has just been outclassed on Centre Court this afternoon.

Wimbledon LIVE: Ons Jabeur vs Petra Kvitova

Ons Jabeur 6-0 5-3 Petra Kvitova*

This is a big game for Ons Jabeur. Petra Kvitova has been blown away up to now but the two-time champion seems to have found her footing. If Jabeur holds serve she’ll be within one game of the match.

The Tunisian moves 30-0 up with a fine drop shot and sets up three chances to take the game after Kvitova drills one out of play.

Jabeur holds.

*Ons Jabeur 6-0 4-3 Petra Kvitova

The crowd will be backing both women, Jabeur because of how well she’s been playing up to now and Kvitova because they want the match to go to three sets.

Kvitova turns the heat up from her own serve and gets up to 30-15. A forehand attack from Jabeur draws the Tunisian back on level terms though.

Kvitova blazes a forehand winner down the line and forces a slip from Jabeur as she tries to change direction sharply. Last year’s runner-up is fine but can’t win the next point and Kvitova holds serve!

Ons Jabeur 6-0 4-2 Petra Kvitova*

The craziest thing about this scoreline is how far Ons Jabeur could still go to improve her game. She’s missed a bunch of first serves which would have helped her through her own service games quicker.

This most recent one is at deuce - thanks to Jabeur saving break point - but a double point gifts a break point back to Kvitova.

Jabeur gets the serve in play but smokes one into the net and gives the break back.

Jabeur’s almost done it again! This time it’s with the forehand as she whips another cross court shot past Kvitova. This time the ball drops wide and the Czech takes the point.

Jabeur manages to take the game to deuce before moving to advantage with a reverse forehand down the line. What a shot that is. Ons Jabeur is having a whale of a time out there now.

She breaks Kvitova for a second time!

Ons Jabeur 6-0 3-1 Petra Kvitova*

Even with some help from the tape which takes all the pace out of the ball as it drops onto Jabeur’s side of court, Kvitova goes behind in the fourth game with a wayward shot to the left side of court.

The Czech checks herself and recovers to claim the next point before Jabeur moves ahead.

This is a closer match as a baseline shot from Kvitova draws her level at 30-30 only for Jabeur to sweep the next two points for a hold of serve.

*Ons Jabeur 6-0 2-1 Petra Kvitova

An attempted lob from Ons Jabeur just lands out of play as Petra Kvitova comes flying up to the net following a slice. The Czech moves 30-15 ahead before a fantastic cross court slice from her opponent brings the game level.

Kvitova flicks one wide from the next rally and has to defend a break point. Jabeur pings another fine backhand down the line but the ball is called out.

Another challenge goes Jabeur’s way and the break point rally is replayed. Kvitova double faults and Jabeur takes the break!

Wimbledon LIVE: Christopher Eubanks vs Stefanos Tsitsipas

Christopher Eubanks, speaking to the BBC after his stunning five-set win against Tsitsipas:

“I feel I’m living a dream right now. This is an absolutely insane. I’ve tried to block everything out and focus on the next match but as cliched as it sounds, when you rattle off all that stuff, it’s surreal, it’s unbelievable. I can’t believe this.

“I came up clutch when I needed to and you guys pushed me. You guys came out in full force to support me today and I honestly can’t tell you what it means. Thanks to each and every one of you for coming out and lending me your support to me, this has been a dream come true.

“The grass and I have had a very strenuous relationship over the year but right now, I think it’s my best friend.”

Jabeur underperformed on her first serve in the opening set and hasn’t had the best of starts with it here. She’s missing quite a few of her first serves which is allowing Kvitova into the game.

The Tunisian manages to hold without too much trouble but she’ll want to get that first serve to land more often.

Ons Jabeur has that twinkle in her eye that professional sports people get when they’re in the zone. She gives aways two points but is back in the hunt and manages to draw the game level.

After pumping one into the net to set up a break point, Jabeur moves to deuce through a wide forehand from Kvitova.

Jabeur then double faults at advantage to keep Kvitova interested. Game and set Jabeur. She comes through the second deuce with aplomb to storm to an opening set victory.

The two-time champion looks sluggish as Jabeur moves 0-30 up once again. The Tunisian gets lucky with a forehand drilled into the tape. The ball drops onto Kvitova’s side of court and Jabeur raises her hand in apology.

She’s earned another three break points though and takes it on her first attempt. It’s scary stuff.

That’s illegal, what a shot! Petra Kvitova dinks a drop shot over the net and forces Ons Jabeur up the court. The Tunisian gets to the ball the whips her wrist over it to ping it back at the tightest of angles and claims the point. Wonderful.

Jabeur then takes the next point too and Kvitova retreats behind a rapid serve for the third rally. Jabeur gets the return in play but the Czech works her to the opposite side of court and the backhand down the line from Jabeur goes wide.

Kvitova manages to get back to 30-30 but a false shot into the net leaves Jabeur with another break point.

Oh my days.

Kvitova has the rally won, she drops a volley over the net as Jabeur comes flying across to the left side of court. There’s no time for Jabeur to swing fully so she rolls her wrists at the ball and manages to get a backhand over the net and in play!

Is this an opening? Four points into the fourth game of the first set and the players are level at 30-30. Rybakina is starting to put Haddad Maia’s serve under pressure and the Brazilian smokes a backhand out of play to leave the defending champion with a break point.

It’s the first one of the match.

Haddad Maia serves into the middle of the box, Rybakina returns sharply. The defending champion takes control from the middle of the baseline and powers a forehand to the back corner which Haddad Maia smokes into the net.

Haddad Maia starts with a gentle serve that Rybakina returns through a decent backhand. A short rally ensues with the Brazilian taking the point.

The next serve is more direct. It’s quicker and aimed at Rybakina’s body. The defending champion tries to shuffle wide of the ball but only manages to skew it out of play with her attempted forehand return.

In no time, Haddad Maia is 40-0 up but is being made to work for this hold. Rybakina starts hitting her shots flatter meaning Haddad Maia has to lift the ball back over the net. The next two rallies go the way of the defending champion.

Haddad Maia does hold! Another accurate serve sees Rybakina punt the ball wide and the match is all square.

Why did Mirra Andreeva not shake hands with umpire at Wimbledon?

13:28 , Jamie Braidwood

Mirra Andreeva’s Wimbledon run is over after defeat to Madison Keys in the fourth round, but the 16-year-old Russian qualifier has announced herself as one to watch out for in the future after a stunning debut at the Championships.

Andreeva looked to be on her way to continuing her brilliant breakthrough at the All England Club after winning the opening set, but the experienced American Keys ground her way back to win the second-set tiebreak and run away with the decider.

There was a huge moment of controversy late in the match as Andreeva was given a point penalty for throwing her racket into the ground for the second time in the contest. Andreeva had slipped behind the baseline, appearing to go over her ankle, before her racket came out of her hand.

The point penalty gave Keys match point - which the American won with a volley at the net after Andreeva thought she had saved it with an ace. Andreeva did not shake hands with the umpire after the defeat.

Wimbledon offers no guarantees over moving Centre Court start time

Wimbledon chief executive Sally Bolton offered no guarantees that an earlier start time will be considered on Centre Court for next year’s tournament.

Matches involving Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic have both been forced into a second day because they have not finished before the 11pm curfew, while Djokovic’s third-round match against Stan Wawrinka concluded with 14 minutes to spare.

Two years ago organisers cited Covid for the decision to stagger start times on the two main show courts, keeping Court One at 1pm and pushing Centre back to 1.30pm, while also adding breaks between the matches.

Why is Mirra Andreeva such a fan of Andy Murray?

12:11 , Mike Jones

During her breakthrough at the Madrid Open, Andreeva said she was star-struck when she saw Andy Murray in the player’s restaurant.

“When you sit here and take in all the stars, like Andy Murray, you see his face,” Andreeva said. “He is so beautiful in life. Sorry, he is so amazing.”

Andreeva congratulated Murray after he won a Challenger title in France ahead of Roland Garros, with the two-time Wimbledon champion responding to the text.

“He actually answered me, so I was really happy about it,” Andreeva said. “He said, ‘Thank you, and good luck in Roland Garros.”

It certainly worked as Andreeva reached the third round, and the teenager said Murray was her “good luck charm”. However upon arriving at Wimbledon, Andreeva said she was “too shy” to talk to her hero.

“I met Andy Murray here,” Andreeva revealed. “But I’m too shy to talk to him. When I see him, I try to leave the facility super quick just to not to talk to him because I’m super shy.”

Who is Mirra Andreeva?

12:05 , Mike Jones

Roger Federer had already won four Wimbledon titles by the timeMirra Andreeva was born in April 2007 - and unsurprisingly the 16-year-old is the youngest player left in the Wimbledon main draw.

Andreeva has an older sister who is also a professional tennis player, Erika Andreeva, and she says she was introduced to the sport by her mother from a very early age

“Actually, I didn’t pick this sport. My mom did,” Andreeva told the WTA earlier this season. “I’m really happy that my mom picked this sport because I feel that I really belong to this sport.”

After turning professional this year, Andreeva made her breakthrough on clay on the Madrid Open, reaching the third round.

Upon arriving at her first grand slam at Roland Garros, Andreeva won three matches in qualifying to reach the main draw. She was knocked out by in three sets by Coco Gauff, who reached the Wimbledon fourth round as a 15-year-old in 2019.

She’s the first qualifier to reach the last 16 at a Wimbledon since Coco Gauff in 2019 and could today become only the seventh qualifier to reach the quarter-finals - and the first since 2010.

Wimbledon crowd boo Victoria Azarenka off court after defeat to Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina

11:53 , Mike Jones

In her post-match press conference, Azarenka said she was surprised by the crowd’s reaction to the non-handshake and said the booing was “not fair”.

“I’m not sure that a lot of people were understanding what’s happening,” she said. “It’s probably been a lot of Pimm’s throughout the day.

“I feel like it’s been pretty consistent for the last 18, 19 months. I haven’t done anything wrong, but keep getting different treatment sometimes.

“But what can I say about the crowd? There is nothing to say. She doesn’t want to shake hands with Russian, Belarusian people. I respected her decision. What should I have done? Stayed and waited? Like, I mean, there’s no thing that I could do that would have been right, so I just did what I thought was respectful towards her decision.

“But this conversation about shaking hands is not a life-changing conversation. So if you guys want to keep talking about it, bring it up, make it a big deal, headlines, whatever it is, keep going.

“I thought it was a great tennis match. If people are going to be focusing only on handshakes or crowd, quite drunk crowd, booing in the end, that’s a shame. That’s probably what it is in the end of the day.”

Wimbledon crowd boo Victoria Azarenka off court after defeat to Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina

11:46 , Mike Jones

Belarusian Victoria Azarenka blamed “drunk” fans in the Wimbledon crowd after she was booed off court following her defeat to Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina.

Svitolina triumphed in an epic three-set battle against the former world No 1 Azarenka in what was the first match between a Ukrainian player and a Russian or Belarusian at this year’s tournament.

Players from Russia and Belarus were banned by Wimbledon last year following the invasion of Ukraine but they have been allowed to compete as neutral athletes this year.

Svitolina, like all Ukrainian players on the professional tour, does not shake hands with Russian or Belarusian opponents due to the ongoing invasion of her home country.

Wimbledon 2023: Mirra Andreeva wins opening set

My goodness that was an impressive opening set from Mirra Andreeva, especially after going down the early break to Madison Keys on Court No 2. The 16-year-old stayed calm in the face of the American’s excellent backhand, forcing errors from the more inconsistent forehand, while Andreeva’s ball striking was much steadier.

The qualifier finds some excellent passing shots, too, which is helping get the crowd on side. The teenager is proving to be very popular at the All England Club.

Iga Swiatek comes back from the brink and is now ready to win Wimbledon

11:39 , Mike Jones

If Iga Swiatek goes on to win Wimbledon 2023 and, make no mistake, Iga Swiatek has proved she is now capable of winning Wimbledon 2023, then this match may just be the turning point in her tournament and maybe in her entire relationship with grass-court tennis.

To say the world No 1 was on the brink of elimination would be the mother of all understatements. At a set and 6-5, 15-40 down facing two match points in a contest where everything had seemed to be conspiring for a Belinda Bencic victory, she was basically in the taxi on her way home.

Yet she dug deep, probably deeper than she ever has on a surface that she openly admits she is “still trying to figure out” to smack a forehand winner down the line and then a backhand winner cross-court.

Why are Russian and Belarusian players allowed back at Wimbledon?

11:32 , Mike Jones

Russian and Belarusian players will return to Wimbledon as neutrals this year after the All England Club lifted its ban on players from both countries competing in the Championships.

Wimbledon was the only one of the four grand slam tournaments to ban players from Russia and Belarus following the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, but was criticised by the men’s and women’s professional tours for doing so.

In response, Wimbledon was stripped of its ranking points and the Lawn Tennis Association was hit by a fine after the ban on Russian and Belarusian players was extended to the summer’s other grass-court events in Britain.

Wimbledon 2023: Matteo Berrettini vs Carlos Alcaraz

10:18 , Jamie Braidwood

Matteo Berrettini says would have “signed with my blood” to have the Wimbledon run he is putting together.

The 2021 finalist has been struggling with a recurring abdominal problem that forced him to miss the defence of his Queen’s Club title but is through to the fourth round after convincing victories over Alex De Minaur and Alexander Zverev.

Berrettini, who was forced out of Wimbledon last year by Covid, said on court after his third-round victory that he had spent many days crying in his bed as he fought to get healthy again.

“If they told me a few weeks ago you’re going to play five days in a row in Wimbledon, I would have signed with my blood,” the Italian said later.

“I really spent days in bed thinking about the tournaments that I missed, the injuries that I had, sadness that I was feeling. I was like, ‘I have to come back and feel alive when I play’.

“That’s the energy I have right now. It doesn’t matter how tired I am. In the morning, go there, enjoy. I find that extra energy that maybe a few years ago I took for granted.”

Rublev was in the middle of the baseline when Bublik hit what he, and everyone else on Centre Court, thought was a clean winner down the line.

But the Russian dived forward, got a racket on the ball and somehow floated it over the net.

“That is one of the great shots we’ve seen here in years,” exclaimed John McEnroe on commentary.

“Right now I don’t even remember how it was. But from what I know, usually I know that I have kind of nothing to lose. Usually I know that the player that is supposed to win this point is having little bit more pressure. I also know how it is to have match points and to kind of try to close it, but not be too impatient.

“I just wanted to kind of play my game no matter what the situation was. I’m happy that I did that.

“For sure,, we respect each other. We like each other. It’s all pretty positive.

“It’s good to have these kind of players on tour that are nice and they have kind of good values, I think. I’m happy that she’s back after becoming a mother.
