Scoresheet from Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game sells for $214K at auction
The official documentation for one of the most immortal nights in NBA history has been sold for a good chunk of change.
The Philadelphia Warriors’ scorer’s sheet from Wilt Chamberlain’s NBA record 100-point game sold for a whopping $214,579 at auction, seller SCP Auctions confirmed to Yahoo Sports. TMZ Sports initially reported the news.
The buyer of the scoresheet is currently unknown, having requested anonymity from the auctioneer.
The eye-boggling stats from Wilt Chamberlain’s record night
As you can see, Warriors statistician Toby DeLuca had to make extra room every quarter to document the 36 field goals and 28 free throws Chamberlain made during the game.
The Warriors won 169-147, the 46th win of a 49-31 season. Chamberlain averaged 50.4 points per game that year, shooting 50.6 percent from the field and hauling in 25.7 rebounds per game.
The team would later lose the Eastern Division finals to eventual champ Boston Celtics in seven games. Bill Russell held Chamberlain to an average of just 33.6 points game.
How the Wilt Chamberlain scoresheet ended up at auction
Unlike certain historic home run balls or other memorabilia from high-profile milestones, it took more than half a century for this scoresheet to hit auction.
According to SCP Auctions, DeLuca reportedly held onto the scorer’s sheet as a personal memento on March 2, 1962, the day that Chamberlain made history for the Warriors against the New York Knicks in Hershey, Penn.
DeLuca later died, and TMZ reports that his widow gave the piece of paper to a friend as a gift. That friend reportedly held onto it for a few more years, and then auctioned it off.
More than doubles price of Knicks’ scoresheet
As if one of the central mementos from one of the NBA’s nearly untouchable records wasn’t enough, the scoresheet was also signed by Chamberlain for good measure.
That addition, as well it being the scoresheet from Chamberlain’s team rather than his opponent, might be why it sold for more than double the Knicks’ scoresheet from that game.
“Wilt’s 100-point game is widely considered the single greatest individual feat in sports history,” SCP auction director Brendan Wells said in a press release. “Few mementos from the seemingly mythological game have survived. This scoresheet, with such well-documented provenance, may be the most important, authentic piece that collectors ever have a chance to acquire. It certainly got the price it deserves.”
