Wide receiver Garrett Young commits to Vols, discusses Josh Heupel’s offense

2023 wide receiver Garrett Young has committed to Tennessee as a preferred walk-on.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound wide receiver is from Alpharetta High School in Alpharetta, Georgia. He holds scholarship offers from Air Force, Army, Louisville and Maryland.

Young discussed his decision to commit to Tennessee with Vols Wire.

“I had a few other scholarship offers that I was sure I made my mind up on,” Young said. “I got a text from coach Mack Scanlon and he invited me up to see a practice, and as soon as I got there I could feel the love from the recruiting staff. They made it feel like home.

“With coach (Josh) Heupel and where the program is going, it was a hard thing to turn down.”

In 2022, Young finished his senior season with 50 receptions, 846 receiving yards, seven receiving touchdowns and averaged 16.9 yards per reception. Young led Alpharetta’s region in receiving yards and ranked No. 9 in Georgia 6A football. He earned first-team 7-6A All-Region honors.

Tennessee’s wide receivers having success under Heupel played a role in Young’s decision to commit.

“The offense that Tennessee runs, it’s any receiver’s dream to be in that room with all that talent and coaching,” he said.

Young finished his high school career as the all-time leader in receptions (109) and receiving yards (1,620) at Alpharetta.
