Here’s why Woodlawn girls basketball coach Demitrice Williams-Elie has resigned

In what seems to be an ever-increasing number of Northwest Louisiana coaches leaving their programs, Woodlawn girls basketball coach Demitrice Williams-Elie has stepped down from the team she directed for seven seasons.

“We appreciate everything she has done for Woodlawn and the girls basketball program,” Woodlawn principal Dr. Grady Smith said. “Coach Elie has not only been successful on the court but off the court as well. She has been dedicated to the program as an assistant and head coach as well as a role model to all of the young ladies that she has touched.

“The countless hours, road trips and other sacrifices can never be repaid.”

Elie said coaching isn’t the same as when she started.

“The girls and I needed a change,” Elie said. “My heart will be forever with Woodlawn, so I didn’t want to go anywhere else.”

Elie will remain at Woodlawn as a teacher.

“We are appreciative of that,” Smith said.

Although the Lady Knights have enjoyed considerable success under Elie, they struggled this past season, going 7-19 overall and 1-3 in District 1-4A. The previous season, they were 15-15 and advanced to the LHSAA Class 4A state playoffs.

In the past week, Airline boys basketball coach Eddie Hamilton resigned and Calvary baseball coach Jason Legg didn’t have his coaching contract renewed.
