Why Vanderbilt signee Max Clark was compared to ex-Vol Drew Gilbert in 2023 MLB Draft

A Vanderbilt signee was compared to a former Tennessee baseball star after being selected in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft on Monday.

Max Clark, a dynamic high school outfielder from Franklin (Indiana) Community High School, was selected by the Detroit Tigers with the No. 3 pick. Moments after, ESPN draft analyst Chris Burke offered a comp for Clark at this stage in his career:

"He reminds me of Drew Gilbert," Burke, himself a former Vols standout, said during the draft broadcast.

The reason? Their bat-flipping, competitive and in-your-face mentality. And their penchant for hitting clutch home runs.

Gilbert starred at Tennessee for three seasons before being taken with the No. 28 pick in the 2022 draft and is now the No. 1 prospect in the organization.

Clark, at 6-foot-1, hit 21 homers in high school and Gilbert, at 5-9, hit 22 during his UT career (followed by 11 so far in the minor leagues).

When Clark hit a two-run shot to tie USA with Canada 5-5 on Sept. 12, 2022, he flashed quite the bat flip in the high-tension matchup, then flashed his undershirt under his uniform, Superman-style.

Gilbert was known for his flashy bat flips and celebrations when he was a Vol too.
