Why is Notre Dame playing USC on Christmas Eve in Die Hard?
For as long as social media has been a thing it feels like the question “IS DIE HARD A CHRISTMAS MOVIE?!?!” has been asked. We’re not here to ask that but instead something else that is clearly very pressing.
In the mega-hit “Die Hard” there is a scene that should leave any college football fan perplexed. Chances are a good amount of you already know what it is but in case you don’t:
The movie takes place on Christmas Eve in 1988. When Carl Winslow, forgive me, Sgt. Al Powell enters Nakatomi Plaza, the security guard, or henchman in this instance, has a football game on TV where you can hear the announcers say: “Notre Dame on top of USC!”
Wait a second!
I feel I speak for everyone in asking: Why is Notre Dame playing USC on Christmas Eve?
We all know that in even years Notre Dame finishes the regular season at USC on Thanksgiving weekend and in odd years USC travels to Notre Dame in mid-October.
Did the filmakers think most people just assumed college football’s biggest regular season games take place the week of Christmas?
Are Notre Dame and USC supposed to be playing in a bowl game?
Whatever the case, I just felt the need to finally ask that question that I’ve wondered for years.
