Who's the most annoying college football announcer? Vols fans can't forgive Chris Fowler | Adams

I recently polled select literary contributors on which SEC football coach annoyed them the most. I was so pleased with their responses that I again have tapped into their annoyances.

Which college football announcer annoys you the most?

Bill writes: I don't think anyone will ever knock Chris Fowler off my "most annoying announcer" throne, because of his lame defense of ESPN's barely concealed project to promote Charles Woodson as a defensive Heisman winner. Plus he has no otherwise redeeming social graces.

A close second is Brad Nessler, who is a poor second on the CBS team to Gary Danielson, who makes up for his non-SEC credentials by at least having played football.

My response: Congrats on holding a grudge for more than 30 years. My wife shares your sentiment over Fowler’s “trailer park trash” barb aimed at Tennessee fans who were outraged by Woodson beating out Peyton Manning for the Heisman Trophy.

I think Melinda is too sensitive about the trailer-park line.

I was the trashiest of trailer park trash while serving in the Army with the Big Red One in Fort Riley, Kansas. I shared the trailer with two other draftees. We never cut the patch of grass surrounding the trailer to the dismay of our landlord. Some of the weeds were as tall as our roof.

In the summer of 1972, strange bugs infested our carpet, which we put in a car wash. That seemed to help.

That same summer, our air conditioner, which was built by the previous tenant (also a GI), conked out. We didn’t have enough money to replace it, so we sweated our way through the summer with the help of floor fans.

The three of us were on the verge of eviction when we were discharged – honorably, I might add.

Terry writes: Hands down the answer should, and would be Chris Fowler. First of all, he works for ESPN, ‘nuff said there. Going back to Peyton getting shafted on the "Heistman" and CF referring to UT fans responses as “trailer park frenzy” showed his true arrogance, lack of character and integrity, which seems to match the ESPN mantra to a “Power” T."

ADAMS: Who's the SEC's most annoying football coach? Readers respond with venom

ADAMS: Why entertainment district might even boost Tennessee football record

ADAMS: Setting 7 goals for Tennessee football in 2023. How about winning at Alabama?

He is a Colorado graduate, so that explains precisely why his broadcasts are pure Buffalo chips. He should be relegated to the televised and riveting Cornhole tournaments they show on occasion.

My response: Thanks for allowing me to continue my defense of trailer parks.

I lived briefly in a trailer park in Victoria, Texas. It was a huge upgrade over the duplex I called home in Port Lavaca, Texas, where I woke up early one morning to an awful smell. I tried to go back to sleep, but the smell was overwhelming. Then, I realized it was coming from my gas floor heater.

I never had a near-death experience in a trailer.

Chris writes: That’s an easy one…Gary Danielson. He is smug, arrogant, and basically criticizes instead of commentating. And I’m sure that it is because I am a UT fan, but for whatever reason he seems overly critical of Tennessee. If he calls the game, I turn the volume down and listen to Bob Kesling.

My response: That might be my most ironic literary contribution of the year.

Chris has favored status among my correspondents. Why? Because he can be very critical. I could do an entire column on his knee-jerk critiques of Tennessee football games. He should have his own column.

My guess is if Chris watched a game with Danielson, they would become best buds.

Thanks for the irony, Chris.

Vols Mark writes: Paul Finebaum.

Every show is like a full-blown circus (with Alabama/Auburn fans being the clown act). Finebaum has a way of pushing caller’s buttons and yet infuriates every school equally. That’s talent - talent driven by a contentious inflammatory view that seems to do nothing more than create trouble.

A good example: Finebaum isn’t responsible for the Auburn tree-poisoning incident, but why would a caller feel like his show was the platform for that admission?

You won't get an interesting rational debate when this goof is stirring the pot.

My response: I didn’t take you for a tree hugger, Mark. But your strong criticism of Paul is understandable.

He’s a former columnist. And talk-show hosts, like columnists, frequently generate love-or-hate responses. This universally beloved column is an exception.

I’ve known Paul for years and always have been impressed with his intellect, recall and stamina. Hosting a daily four-hour TV show on the SEC Network isn’t for the faint of heart.

One more thing I like about Paul: He’s complimentary of me when I’m a guest.

Mike writes: I cannot stand to listen to Jordan Rodgers. He has a condescending attitude and acts like Mr. Know It All. The only reason he has a job as an announcer is his brother is a highly successful pro quarterback. And besides that, his voice annoys me.

My response: In defense of Rodgers, he seems to do plenty of prep work for the games he covers on the SEC Network.

One of my football fantasies: Jordan and his more famous brother, Aaron, in the same booth telecasting a game. That would raise the term “dead air” to a new level.

Aaron has no relationship with his family, Jordan included.

David writes: Don't have any real pains. I try to tune in Bob Kesling and his guys, turn the sound on the TV down and listen to their comments while watching the TV. (Sometime hard to get them in sync with the video.)

However, to answer your question: Brad Nessler and Gary Danielson because they to me seem super arrogant, and Nessler’s personality to me is grating and seems to be at times disinterested in the game. Kirk Herbstreit runs a close second - an arrogant Ohio State snob.

My response: You aren’t the only listener who holds Herbstreit’s Ohio State connection against him. He’s about as Ohio State as you can get.

He’s a former Ohio State quarterback who was a team co-captain as a senior in 1992. His father, Jim Herbstreit, was an Ohio State co-captain in 1960 and later was an assistant on coach Woody Hayes’ staff.

Herbstreit’s wife, Allison, is a former Ohio State cheerleader.
