Where Jackson State, other SWAC schools rank in public schools athletics revenue

USA TODAY released its latest revenue and expense numbers for the 232 public institutions at the Division I level. It's no surprise Historically Black Colleges and Universities, along with the Southwestern Athletic Conference, are not in the same zip code as Power Five schools and other FBS schools when it comes to making money.

Ohio State was the No.1 school with $251,615,345.

The disparity of revenue is pretty evident. None of the HBCUs were in the top 150 of Division I or the Top 25 of the FCS.

Jackson State made $12,821,652 and ranked at No. 208. Southern is the highest ranked SWAC school at No. 163 with revenues of $18,190,798. The lowest ranking SWAC school was Mississippi Valley State at No. 231 with $4,040,925.

Mississippi's two largest schools, both from the SEC, show the disparity, too. Ole Miss is No. 30 with $133,557,937 in revenue and Mississippi State is No. 40 at $110,653,367. Southern Miss ranked 125th at $28,361,867.

Jackson State's breakdown is as follows: Ticket sales ($4,608,925), rights/licensing ($1,215,491), student fees ($3,547,840), school funds ($1,500,000), other ($1,949,396).

Here's how other SWAC school ranked: No. 192 Alabama State ($14,550,273), No. 195 Prairie View ($14,332,177), No. 197 Alabama A&M ($14,006,086), No. 202 (Texas Southern, $13,362,715), No. 205 Florida A&M ($13,172,315), No. 215 Grambling ($11,378,552), No. 226 Arkansas-Pine Bluff ($8,650,669) and No. 229 Alcorn State ($6,159,503).

For the last three years the SWAC has benefitted from Deion Sanders presence in advertising, marketing deals and being on ESPN and ABC.

With Sanders bolting Jackson State for Colorado, it remains to be seen if the SWAC can continue to capitalize off the momentum he brought to the conference.
