West Muskingum recognizing three members to Hall of Fame

FALLS TOWNSHIP — West Muskingum will recognize its next Hall of Fame class on Friday during the boys basketball game with Crooksville.

Cade McCullough, Bart Border and the late Ty Dierkes will be recognized during the ceremony.

Cade McCullough

Cade is a 2010 graduate who excelled in football and baseball. He lettered for three years in baseball and was All MVL his junior and senior seasons, while his name is littered throughout the West Muskingum record books in football.

His 1,566 yards in his senior season are the most rushing yards in a season. His 3,025 career rushing yards rushing are second most in West Muskingum history. His 251 rushing yards against Maysville was the second highest total at that time and his 19 rushing TD’s was also second in the record book at that time. Cade had 41 career touchdowns and over 200 tackles in his career from his linebacker position.

Cade’s postseason honors include two-time All-Muskingum Valley League, Times Recorder Prime Time Player, MVL Player of the Year, First Team All District and First Team All Ohio. He graduated from Ohio University with a degree in chemical engineering.

Bart Border

Bart was a two-year football letterman and a four-year track and field letterwinner. The Bart Border Show was a typical headline in the local newspaper during the spring of 1996 as he dominated in multiple field events during his 4-year career. When looking at his accomplishments, it’s easy to see that he is one of the best athletes ever to wear the blue and gold.

Bart was a 7-time MVL champion, winning the pole vault three years and the high jump and long jump two years apiece. He also won multiple county meet titles and set the county meet record in the pole vault. He was named both the Times Recorder and the East District Track and Field athlete of the year in 1996.

Bart was the state runner up in the pole vault in 1995 as a junior. He closed out his track career at the state meet where he qualified for the long jump, high jump and pole vault. He didn’t participate in the long jump because it was at the same time as the pole vault.

He finished third in the state in the high jump and brought home only the third state championship in school history in the pole vault. He still holds the school records in the pole vault (14-foot-10) and long jump (21-foot-4) and is tied in high jump at 6-8 with Brian Miller.

Ty J. Dierkes

Ty was a mountain of a man with a heart of gold. He had a booming voice that could be intimidating, but once you really knew him he was a Teddy Bear. Ty passed away this fall after a battle with cancer, but Ty’s impact on West Muskingum will never be forgotten.

Ty Dierkes
Ty Dierkes

Ty was the owner of Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home and served on the West Muskingum Board of Education from 2011 to 2023. Ty was a trusted board member in our community and served the students and residents of West Muskingum with integrity.

Ty was always the first to say “if it is for our kids we need to find a way”. Ty was as generous a man as you will find and when it came to school fundraising, he was always a yes. Ty and his wife, Erin generously donated and supported almost all fundraising projects of any type in the West Muskingum School District for the last 25 years.

Ty will always be West Muskingum’s biggest fan and we are sure he is looking down proudly as his picture and name will be permanently displayed in the West Muskingum Hall of Honor.
