West Michigan Heat takes second at homeschool nationals after winning state

HUDSONVILLE - The West Michigan Heat competed at the National Homeschool soccer tournament during the weekend.

The Heat is a homeschool team made up of players throughout West Michigan.

The team won the Michigan State Cup and Midwest Invitational and finished second at nationals.

On Friday, the team beat the Indy Warriors 5-0 and tied West Wake Wolves (N.C.) 1-1. In pool play these games earned the Heat a spot in the Gold semifinals.

On Saturday morning, the Heat won against a very physical side in GCAA Stallions (N.C.), 5-2. Later on Saturday, the Heat played New Life Camp Storm (N.C.) in the championship game and lost 3-1.

"It was a tremendous end to our season," Heat coach Ted Jones said. "The boys ended a Heat best record of 25-2-1 and played the toughest schedule ever in our history."

Malachi Haight was a key contributor to the team from West Olive.

The rest of the team included Teagan Kraal, Liam George, Caleb Staal, Patrick Nkunzimana, Nathan Sijtsma, Levi Brumels, Boaz Shaffer, Max Wierenga, Josiah Motyka, Isaiah Ashby, Samual Sijtsma, Mason VanderStel, Owen Dumond, Jacob Kwiatowski, Reuben Warolin, Jaden Allen, Brady Clouse, Kiah Shaffer, Joshua Rousch and Kizombo (LeHani) Kalumbula.
