West Ham vs Brentford LIVE! Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

West Ham vs Brentford LIVE!

Jarrod Bowen scored a hat-trick as West Ham beat bogey side Brentford 4-2 to ease the pressure on David Moyes.

The Hammers won their first match of 2024, with Bowen scoring his first goals since before Christmas, to end a miserable run of eight games without a victory which had prompted more questions about the manager's future.

Played five, lost five was their sorry Premier League record against Brentford, the only team of the 43 Moyes had faced in the top flight and not previously beaten.

Finally the rot was stopped as Brentford, already plunged deeper into the relegation scrap earlier on Monday following Everton's points deduction being reduced from 10 to six, suffered another defeat - their 12th in 15 matches since beating West Ham at home in November.

West Ham vs Brentford highlights

  • GOAL! Bowen scores inside first five minutes

  • GOAL! Quickfire second for Bowen and West Ham

  • GOAL! Maupay gets one back for Brentford

  • GOAL! Bowen heads home for hat-trick

  • GOAL! Emerson fires home fourth for Hammers

  • GOAL! Late Wissa strike cuts deficit

Reality of Brentford's relegation battle becomes clear on demoralising day

22:10 , Marc Mayo

Brentford were left to contemplate the upcoming battle for their Premier League survival after a difficult day in which the number four became their worst enemy.

The news before kick-off that Everton had been returned four of the ten points deducted earlier in the season, after appealing their punishment for breaching financial rules, led to the grim irony that precisely four minutes and four seconds were on the clock as Brentford conceded the opener of what proved to be a 4-2 defeat at West Ham.

Triple change from the away side.

West Ham fans now giving it a bit of ‘Forever Blowing Bubbles’ after some ‘Ole’ treatment.

Lucas Paqueta is into showboat mode now. Might be wise to get him off given he's just back from injury.

Malik Ouzia at London Stadium

Woof. That is an absolute rocket.

Don't underestimate the importance of that Areola save at the other end that denied Onyeka, though.

Highlights: Emerson scores stunner for 4-1

It’s a good’un.

GGGOOOOOAAALLLL!!!! West Ham 4-1 Brentford | Emerson, 69'

21:28 , Marc Mayo

WHAT. A. HIT!

The ball drops to Emerson Palmieri 25 yards out and it’s one of those where every home fan shouts ‘shoot!’.

He duly obliges and drills a sensational effort into the top corner!

West Ham 3-1 Brentford | 68 mins

21:27 , Marc Mayo

Vladimir Coufal and Tomas Soucek get right in Christian Norgaard’s face after the Brentford midfielder tumbles in the box.

There was an arm of his back but nothing of the sort to justify a penalty.

Looks like there were some afters in the dugouts too, with Kevin Nolan getting involved. Old habits die hard, eh?

West Ham 3-1 Brentford | 66 mins

21:26 , Marc Mayo

SAVE!

Alphonse Areola denies the Bees another quick route back into the match as Frank Onyeka flicks a cross goalwards, but the keeper parries well at the near post.

West Ham 2-1 Brentford | 61 mins

21:20 , Marc Mayo

Ben Mee has failed to walk off his injury and limps off to be replaced by Nathan Collins.

Malik Ouzia at London Stadium

21:19 , Marc Mayo

It's starting to get a bit nervy in here. West Ham haven't quite been able to impose themselves in the same way since the break and Brentford have improved markedly.

West Ham 2-1 Brentford | 60 mins

21:19 , Marc Mayo

The visitors are gently building up a head of steam here but West Ham are doing a good job at repelling their deliveries into the box.

Keane Lewis-Potter is causing trouble down West Ham’s left but the final ball has not quite been there yet.

West Ham 2-1 Brentford | 54 mins

Not for the first time tonight, he looks utterly, utterly baffled. For what reason, who knows.

West Ham 2-1 Brentford | 51 mins

21:10 , Marc Mayo

Nathan Collins and Vitaly Janelt both get stripped and ready on the Brentford bench but no change yet, Ben Mee will try and walk it off.

West Ham come forward with the defender on the sideline but Brentford escape a good cross.

Good early intent from West Ham sees Lucas Paqueta win a free-kick in the Brentford half.

West Ham 2-1 Brentford | Kick-off!

21:05 , Marc Mayo

The second half is underway at London Stadium.

No changes from either manager.

Brentford down but not out

21:00

Brentford have fought their way back into the game but have been a little lacklustre even after halving the deficit.

Neal Maupay’s shot remains the only one on target they’ve managed all game.

Some majorly suspect defending contributed to the Hammers’ early goals and Ivan Toney has been a spectator. Much to work on for Thomas Frank.

Hammers not quite able to build on mega start

20:54 , Marc Mayo

West Ham looked to be rolling towards a huge win after only seven minutes.

Jarrod Bowen struck twice in quick succession as the Hammers bombed down the flanks to create chances at will early on.

However, Neal Maupay’s response after only 13 minutes has drained a bit of the energy out of London Stadium.

They’ve had lots of shots (13) but not tested Mark Flekken much since the goals, with only three efforts on target.

Malik Ouzia at London Stadium

20:49 , Marc Mayo

West Ham's best 45 minutes of the year so far, not that the bar is a high one. There'll be a bit of anxiety that they're only a goal up, though.

West Ham 2-1 Brentford | Half time!

20:48 , Marc Mayo

That’s the break! West Ham have the lead after three goals in the first 15 minutes.

West Ham 2-1 Brentford | 45+2 mins

20:48 , Marc Mayo

Ivan Toney is the next to have his blushes spared by the flag.

A set play is cleared but recycled towards the England striker, who is a little slow to fire at goal and puts it wide from close range under pressure.

West Ham 2-1 Brentford | 45 mins

20:46 , Marc Mayo

The flag goes up on Tomas Soucek as he latches onto a looping free-kick onto the six-yard line. Over the bar, anyway.

Three added minutes.

West Ham 2-1 Brentford | 43 mins

20:44 , Marc Mayo

Drifting rather casually towards the break here in east London.

West Ham 2-1 Brentford | 41 mins

20:42 , Marc Mayo

Tomas Soucek heads over after a free-kick is worked short by West Ham.

That’s shot number 13 for the hosts - but only three have been on target.

West Ham 2-1 Brentford | 37 mins

20:38 , Marc Mayo

Strong race between Keane Lewis-Potter and Konstantinos Mavropanos as Brentford look to break down the right flank. In flies the Greek defender, who wins the ball and a big roar from his fans as he slides it into touch.

The Bees remain in attack though, with a minor penalty claim rebuffed before Tomas Soucek claims a cross.

West Ham 2-1 Brentford | 33 mins

20:35 , Marc Mayo

A few cries for West Ham to push forward more as they break into the Brentford half. Mohammed Kudus fires at goal from about 20 yards out, straight at the keeper.

West Ham 2-1 Brentford | 28 mins

20:29 , Marc Mayo

Spell of Brentford pressure around the hosts’ box but they’ve struggled to find Ivan Toney in a position of any threat all half.

Malik Ouzia at London Stadium

20:26 , Marc Mayo

Sergio Reguilon wants to be very careful here. He's just picked up a blatant yellow card but is still ranting and raving at Simon Hooper about goodness knows what. Mathias Jensen wisely drags him away.

West Ham 2-1 Brentford | 24 mins

20:25 , Marc Mayo

Sergio Reguilon booked and he has to be dragged away by his teammates as he lambasts the referee, after quite blatantly felling Mohammed Kudus.

Perhaps he’s angry about being on the end of Kudus’ shove on the 18-yard line down the other end.

James Ward-Prowse is over it for West Ham... cleared.

Malik Ouzia at London Stadium

20:23 , Marc Mayo

Every West Ham player is playing with just that bit more zip tonight, no sign of the hesitancy that has made them so dull to watch in the last few weeks.

(John Walton/PA Wire)

West Ham 2-1 Brentford | 22 mins

20:23 , Marc Mayo

Wide from Lucas Paqueta as he drives a volley goalwards having dropped deep for a cross. A minute later, Mohammed Kudus hits one off target from range.

The Hammers have steadied the ship since conceding.

West Ham 2-1 Brentford | 21 mins

20:21 , Marc Mayo

West Ham anger as Jarrod Bowen steals the ball off Kristoffer Ajer and is denied a free-kick 20 yards from goal as the Norwegian lunges in.

Simon Hooper says he got the ball. Not too sure he did...

West Ham 2-1 Brentford | 17 mins

20:18 , Marc Mayo

Not really a case of ‘and breathe...’ yet with Brentford on the front foot hunting a leveller.

Mohammed Kudus gets away with a clumsy barge as he chases a ball out of his own box.

Up the other end, another dangerous cross from Vladimir Coufal beats Tomas Soucek before Lucas Paqueta scoops over.

Highlights: Neal Maupay halves the deficit

20:17 , Marc Mayo

The Frenchman escaped his marker to put Brentford back in it.

Malik Ouzia at London Stadium

20:16 , Marc Mayo

Confidence is so fragile here that that Maupay goal has immediately prompted a real sense of unease. Cracking start to this game.

GGGOOOOAAALLL!!! West Ham 2-1 Brentford | Maupay, 13'

20:13 , Marc Mayo

GAME ON!

Neal Maupay peels off his marker to slot home at the near post!

Malik Ouzia at London Stadium

20:12 , Marc Mayo

Well, what were you worried about? A genuinely brilliant start from West Ham, both full-backs back among the assists and Jarrod Bowen back among the goals. Terrific.

David Moyes is playing ball boy now and urging his team on. He wants them going in for the kill.

Highlights: Jarrod Bowen scores twice early

20:10 , Marc Mayo

Go on then, here’s both goals.

GGGOOOOAAALLLL!!! West Ham 2-0 Brentford | Bowen, 7'

20:08 , Marc Mayo

JARROD BOWEN AT THE DOUBLE!

Brentford in disarray as West Ham bomb down the right flank and Vladimir Coufal tees up the unmarked Bowen to bury his effort!

Malik Ouzia at London Stadium

20:06 , Marc Mayo

I'm not even exaggerating when I say that little exchange down the left was potentially the best bit of football West Ham have played all year.

GGGOOOOAAALLLL!!! West Ham 1-0 Brentford | Bowen, 5'

20:05 , Marc Mayo

JARROD BOWEN WITH THE BREAKTHROUGH!

Brentford have a weak claim for a foul waved away as the hosts win possession in the middle third.

Lucas Paqueta is in the thick of a lovely sweeping move down the left flank before Bowen slams home at the near post.

West Ham 0-0 Brentford | 4 mins

20:05 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

Tomas Soucek ghosts in from a Vladimir Coufal cross and its touched onto him... but he shoots over!

That was perfectly set for the Czech’s in-step, eight yards out. Misses the target.

West Ham 0-0 Brentford | 2 mins

20:03 , Marc Mayo

Jarrod Bowen back through the middle for the Hammers, and he chases a ball into touch after a shank from Kurt Zouma leads to a scrappy moment.

Mohammed Kudus forces a Brentford error high up the pitch and lets fly from the edge of the box... wide. Really wide. That’s gone for a throw-in.

Malik Ouzia at London Stadium

20:00 , Marc Mayo

Unsurprisingly, a big old cheer for Lucas Paqueta's name as it's read out. I suspect a few of his teammates feel the same - the likes of Emerson, Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus have all been short of the best without the man who makes the whole thing tick.

West Ham vs Brentford | Kick-off!

It’s a big one in the capital as east meets west.

Here come the teams!

19:57 , Marc Mayo

Our referee for the night, Simon Hooper, leads out the two teams.

Kick-off up next!

West Ham can knock on Europe's door

19:56 , Marc Mayo

Victory here will send the Hammers up two places to eighth.

With a spot in the Europa League looking very unlikely now, with an eight-point deficit on Manchester United to make up, the battle for seventh is rising.

However, the FA Cup winners could yet nab the Europa Conference League spot off seventh place.

Everton points deduction throws Brentford into mire

19:55 , Marc Mayo

With the news that Everton have been handed back four of the ten points deducted, after appealing their punishment for financial breaches, Brentford are peering nervously over their shoulder.

Now 16th, they have just a five-point buffer on the dropzone.

The Bees could not be blamed for hoping Nottingham Forest are also handed a penalty, but their financial case won’t start until next month.

A win will send Brentford 13th, though.

Ten-minute warning!

Not long now until the teams emerge from the tunnels.

Kick-off is just ten minutes’ away.

Uncertainty clouds David Moyes in bid to end Bees hoodoo

19:49 , Marc Mayo

“If Sunday's Wembley showpiece produced, definitively, the first step on Jurgen Klopp’s farewell tour, then perhaps, for David Moyes, West Ham’s home meeting against Brentford will come to be viewed as something similar.”

Rewind: Nathan Collins nets winner in reverse fixture

The Brentford defender’s first strike for the club was the difference in a five-goal thriller over in west London.

More from David Moyes

19:41 , Marc Mayo

The West Ham boss tells Sky Sport that Lucas Paqueta is a “huge player” to have back tonight, but admits he won’t get ahead of himself.

He says: “My concern is he’s just back from injury, how much can I expect from him? How long will I get out of him? And obviously that there’s no sign of re-injury.”

Thomas Frank explains regular switch to back three

19:39 , Marc Mayo

“Yeah, at this moment in time.

“The problem was until we got Sergio Reguilon in, we were missing our two best full-backs and potentially our two best wingers.

“So that affected it a little bit, in terms of what I’d like to do. In general it’s about style of play and getting the best players on the pitch.”

Latest on David Moyes' future

19:35

David Moyes believes it will become clear whether the time is right to leave West Ham at the end of the season as he contemplates following Jurgen Klopp’s lead in walking away from his job this summer.

Moyes revealed on Friday that he has been offered a contract extension beyond his current deal, which is due to expire at the end of June.

However, the 60-year-old says he wants to wait to see how the rest of the season plays out before taking stock and making a decision over his future in the summer.

Malik Ouzia at London Stadium

19:28 , Marc Mayo

David Moyes has just confirmed to Sky Sports that the decision to leave Nayef Aguerd out tonight is down to his form rather than any injury. It's been a really poor run for the Moroccan, who showed a lot of promise last season but really hasn't kicked on.

Konstantinos Mavropanos has not exactly been hammering down the door with his displays either but gets a chance tonight.

Head-to-head record

Brentford will don their away kit tonight, which is hung up in the London Stadium dressing rooms.

Thomas Frank update on Brentford injuries

18:25 , Marc Mayo

Meanwhile, there appears to be little good news just around the corner in Brentford’s treatment room.

Kevin Schade, Bryan Mbeumo and Aaron Hickey were all discussed in Thomas Frank’s pre-match presser.

He said: “Nothing has changed from the Manchester City game, everyone from that game is available again, so that's good.

“There’s no big progress with [Kevin Schade and Aaron Hickey]. The only two that are definitely out for the season is Rico Henry and Josh Dasilva; Josh had a very successful surgery two days ago and he’s good.

“I don't have an exact timeframe on Schade, but Bryan is progressing and that's a shorter one, hopefully after the international break.

“Hickey’s setback is in relation to his hamstring.”

Will we see Lucas Paqueta tonight?

18:15 , Marc Mayo

David Moyes labelled the Brazilian as “in contention” when addressing the media on Friday.

“Lucas Paqueta’s back in training, he’s very close to returning and hopefully that will give us a huge boost,” Moyes confirmed.

“He’s certainly in contention [for Monday], but I’ll need to find out exactly where he is.”
