One was the second pick in 2017, the other went 10th. Who do you think has had better results, the Kansas City Chiefs or Chicago Bears? A look at the 2017 draft class of quarterbacks.

The Denver Broncos chose Chad Kelly out of Mississippi via Clemson. He wasn’t able to stay out of trouble in college or the pros. Kelly had one kneel down as a Bronco. He is currently a star in the CFL.

The Detroit Lions selected Brad Kaaya out of the University of Miami in the sixth round. He has yet to play in the NFL despite trying out with five different teams.

Nathan Peterman, Round 5, Pick No. 151

Nathan Peterman came to the Buffalo Bills from Pitt and rapidly became the punch line of joke after joke. Sometimes life isn’t fair. Peterman’s struggles in Buffalo were documented weekly on highlight shows and the internet. Peterman threw five interceptions in the first half of his first NFL start. He eventually set the league record for most interceptions thrown with less than 100 career passing attempts. He was released by the Bills less than two years after being drafted, throwing 12 interceptions to just three touchdowns. Peterman signed with the Raiders and was with them from 2018-21. Since then, he has been a Chicago Bear.

Joshua Dobbs, Round 4, Pick No. 135

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Joshua Dobbs from Tennessee. He has had an intriguing run, to say the least. The 2023 season saw Dobbs start for the Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings. He was also with Cleveland earlier in the year. Dobbs has bounced around and defines journeyman, and that isn’t an insult.

C.J. Beathard, Round 3, Pick No. 104

The San Francisco 49ers dipped into Iowa to pluck C.J. Beathard. He made 12 starts and lost 10. Beathard is currently a Jacksonville Jaguar and won his only start for them in 2023.

Davis Webb, Round 3, Pick No. 87

Davis Webb bounced around in college going from Texas Tech to Cal. He somehow wound up a third-round pick of the New York Giants. Webb did nothing with them. He then wound up as a New York Jet and is currently a Buffalo Bill. He lost his lone NFL start as a Giant in 2022. He is out of the NFL now.

DeShone Kizer, Round 2, Pick No. 52

DeShone Kizer had the misfortune of being chosen by the Cleveland Browns. He made 15 starts for them in 2017 and lost every one of them. He then wound up with Green Bay in 2018 and completed 20-of-42 passes. Kizer was then off to the Raiders, who waived him in May without playing a down.

Deshaun Watson, Round 1, Pick No. 12

Deshaun Watson starred at Clemson and his college coach Dabo Swinney said NFL teams made a mistake letting him slide to the 12th slot. He had a great early run in Houston and then was caught up in a self-induced scandal. Watson is a Cleveland Brown with a huge contract and seems to have spent more time suspended or sidelined than living up to the pact.

Patrick Mahomes, Round 1, Pick No. 10

The Chiefs struck it rich when they drafted Patrick Mahomes out of Texas Tech, KC traded the No. 27 overall pick, a third-round pick, and their 2018 first-round selection to the Buffalo Bills to move up to No. 10 to select Mahomes. He is the best quarterback in the NFL, according to many and has already won two Super Bowls.

Mitchell Trubisky, Round 1, Pick No. 2

The Bears made a major move to get the second pick and draft Mitchell Trubisky from North Carolina. Chicago moved up from the third overall pick by trading the San Francisco 49ers two third-round picks and a fourth-round pick. Trubisky was less than mediocre in Chicago and has been worse as a quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers. An all-time bust.
