Wellington rolls past Vega in bi-district football matchup

Coming off a disappointing loss to close the regular season and slip out of first place in the district, the Wellington Skyrockets sure bounced back to start the playoffs.

The offense scored on all but two possessions and the defense recorded a shutout as Wellington trounced Vega 44-6. The Skyrockets are going to the area round of the playoffs while the Longhorns' season is over.

"Our seniors stepped up and led well this week," head coach Greg Proffitt said. "We had a tough loss the week before and we responded in a really good way. Hats off to our seniors for a great night. It's survive and advance this time of year and I'm looking forward to the next one."

It was a superb night for running back Travon Lewis, who put up 127 yards and three touchdowns. Receiver Brenden Garcia hauled in two touchdown passes that spanned 114 yards as Wellington (8-3) never punted.

It was the defense that was the most impressive, however. Vega was held to three first downs, two of which came on penalties. The Longhorns were held to 42 yards of offense and had one yard in the first half. The only points Vega managed came on a scoop and score fumble recovery by Braden Brorman in the fourth quarter as the defense held Vega off the board.

"We try to teach our kids to have fun, fly around and be physical," Proffitt said. "Our kids really did their job tonight. Vega runs the ball, we play them every year and they play us hard every year. I feel good about where we're at and hopefully we keep that momentum moving forward."

As for Vega (3-7), it wasn't the end they were hoping for after a challenging season. Head coach Jason Porton was thankful to the senior class while hoping for a bright future.

"It's tough to go out like this," Porton said. "We've had a rough year, but these seniors have been part of a lot of success. We appreciate everything done and how they've battled for six years. ...For the young guys, we don't like the taste it left in our mouth. We have to get back to work and make sure it doesn't happen again."

Wellington will play Morton in the area round next week.
