Weekend Whipper: Serious Impact When a Crampon Flips Mixed Climber Upside Down

Have you ever wondered why the first rule of ice climbing is “Don’t fall?” This weekend whipper highlights the consequences of whipping with crampons on–even if it’s technically on mixed terrain.

High on the Nakayama Ridge, on Japan’s Mount Yatsugatake, our whippee takes a seemingly innocuous fall (good gear, not far below her) but with rope stretch, gear extension, and a whole lot of pointy bits, even the little wingers can pack a punch.

Happy Friday, and be safe out there this weekend.

Readers, please send your weekend whipper videos, information, and any lessons learned to Anthony Walsh, awalsh@outsideinc.com.
