Weekend Roundup: New Lex, Ridgewood grapplers take second; West M among girls teams advancing

Here is a look at the area results from the weekend:

Saturday's results

Wrestling

New Lexington second at Gallia: The sectional runner-up Panthers finished with 187.5 points, falling short to Washington Court House's 211.5 in the Gallia Academy 2 bracket.

The top four placers in each weight class at each sectional moved onto next week's district meet at Gallia Academy.

Harrison Ratliff won New Lex's only championship at 144 pounds, via a forfeit against WCH's Wesley Gibbs, while James Sharp (106), Hunter Hinkle (120), Tyson Spicer (132) and Mason Rider (138) finished second; Conner Spicer (150), Jonathan Dold (157), Nolan Carson (175) and Chase Shriner (190) came in third and Eli Dixon (113) and Nathan Gottke (165) were fourth, as 11 Panthers will compete in the districts.

Sheridan was fourth in the Gallia 1 bracket with 153.5 points, as Cash Owen pinned Circleville's Andrew Siembida in 2:18 for the 106-pound title, and Coltyn Reedy won the 150-pound division with a 24-9 tech fall against Miami Trace's Asher LeBeau in the finals.

Luke Skinner (138), Logan Householder (144) and Jacob Householder (157) were second, Thad Nikodym (165) came in third and Bryer Stenson (126) was fourth to round out the Generals' seven qualifiers.

Maysville fourth at Claymont: The Panthers will send six onto districts after placing fourth with 124.5 points.

Danny Waite won the 126-pound title with a 6-4 decision over Carrollton's Levi Pidgeon, while Carter Abella (120), Caleb Monlux (144), Logan Wilhite (150) and Kade Renner (215) placed second and Walker Archer (113) was fourth.

Tri-Valley came in fifth (114), Zanesville was ninth (59) and Cambridge came in 10th (51) at the meet.

Logan McClellan won the 190-pound final with an 8-0 major decision against Indian Creek's Luke McMillion, while Jaleel Brown (144), Hayden Stevens (157) and Dylan Pierce (165) were third and Slade Armstrong (138) was fourth for the Scotties.

Vince Coleman (106) and Noah McFee (175) were second for the Blue Devils, while Marshall Laishley (138) placed third and Baylon Rose (120) and Noah Keen (126) were fourth for the Bobcats.

Philo fifth at Steubenville: The Electrics finished with 132 points, while John Glenn tied for sixth (116), Morgan was eighth (73) and River View was 10th (36).

Talan Bailey (157), Brayden Bernard (190) and Landon Gill (285) placed second and Ryan South (106) was fourth for Philo.

Cohen Bunting won the Muskies' lone title with a 15-9 decision over Morgan's Bradley Spencer in the 165-pound final, while Dominic Bates (138) and Owen Edwards (144) placed second, Lincoln Gilcher (150) and Kian Barton (215) finished third and Shawn Metzger (113) and Kris Wise (132) were fourth as seven grapplers advanced for John Glenn.

Logan Niceswanger pinned Bernard in 1:53 to capture the 190-pound title and Devin Waggy (285) was fourth to also move on with Spencer for the Raiders, while Gavin Huff (120) placed third and Blaze Klein (138) fourth for the Black Bears.

Ridgewood takes second at Sandy Valley: The Generals had seven district qualifiers and totaled 162 points to finish behind first-place Garaway, which had 174.

Dyllan Austin claimed the lone title, scoring a 14-5 major decision against Meadowbrook's Kolton Snyder in the 190-pound finals, while Brodi Hardesty (126) and Wyatt Lockard (144) placed second, Mason Colvin (138), Aiden Sparger (157) and Logan Sesser (285) finished third and Gabriel Lamneck (165) was fourth for Ridgewood's qualifiers.

Meadowbrook was eighth (96), as Noah Lingle (150) and Logan Greer (175) took third and Brayden Jensen (106) and Evan Dickey (120) came in fourth to advance with Snyder, while Andrew Stark (190) placed third to also move on for West Muskingum.

Crooksville third at Barnesville: The Ceramics had a pair of sectional champions and tallied 111.5 points to place behind Barnesville (266.5) and Waterford (120).

Christian Browning won at 132 pounds, beating Pomeroy Meigs' Jacob Roblero with a 10-2 major decision in the finals, while Hunter Browning topped Union Local's Gunner Gossett 7-2 in the 144-pound final for Crooksville.

Jacob Hammer (138) placed third and Henry Reynolds (215) was fourth to round out the Ceramics' district qualifiers.

Coshocton finished seventh (85), as Owen Walters (190) was second, getting pinned in 2:27 by Alexander's Camron Oberholzer in the finals, while Brandon Watts (150) and Ethan Larrison (215) were third and Julian Rivera (285) was fourth.

Area girls earn regional berths: Several area teams had girls advance to the regional tournament after pre-regional meets were held on Friday, as the top four advanced to Olentangy Orange next Sunday.

At Claymont on Friday, Tri-Valley's Kandice Spry (115) and Maysville's Kelsie Bryan (145) won titles, Maysville's Kyrie Valentine (105) placed second, and John Glenn's Rowen Sabatino (100) and Tri-Valley's Ally Peterson (135) and Johnna Paynter (235) came in third.

At Gallia Academy on Friday, New Lex's Olivia Beaulieu (190) and Mia Prince (235) claimed titles, New Lex's Rachelle Kimble (125) and Morgan's Izzy Levingston (135) placed second, New Lex's Lilah Carson (105) and Skylar Albertine (170) finished third, and Morgan's Hannah Newburn (100) was fourth.

Girls Basketball

Division I

Tri-Valley 40, Grove City 35: MacKenzie Harvey converted the go-ahead three-point play with 15 seconds left then Annika Collet blocked the Greyhounds' tying 3-point attempt to help the 16th-seeded Scotties (16-7) advance in tournament play.

Maddie Garber had 13 points and Addison Wilson and Harvey chipped in eight for Tri-Valley, which led 15-7 after one quarter but trailed 19-17 at the half and 30-29 entering the fourth.

The Scotties advanced to face fourth seed Olentangy Liberty at 7 p.m. Wednesday at a site to be determined.

Thea Palmore led Grove City with 13 points.

Division II

West Muskingum 60, Coshocton 14: Debra Allen poured in a team-high 15 points and Teriauna Brandford added 10 points, as the top-seeded Tornadoes (21-3) advanced with a win in the sectional final.

Hannah Roberts also had nine points and Lydiah Huey scored six as 11 players scored for West Muskingum, which led 20-8 after one quarter and 31-12 at the half.

Isabelle Lauvray had 10 points for the Redskins (0-23).

West Muskingum faces Philo in the district semifinal at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Maysville.

Philo 43, East Liverpool 33: Bailey Dement made 7 of 12 free throws in a 16-point fourth quarter, as the 10th seeded Electrics edged the ninth-seeded Potters in a sectional final.

Dement finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, Caitlin Rose had four of her 11 points in the final quarter and Aleigha Busse chipped in 10 points and six boards for Philo, which trailed 6-5 after one quarter before taking a 19-14 at the half and 27-25 lead into the fourth.

Halli Harris had four steals and Emily Stockdale and Olivia Winland grabbed three steals in the win.

Kenzie Headley led East Liverpool with 11 points and Ayasley Galeoti added seven.

West Holmes 72, Morgan 29: Aveona Yoder scored 14 and Chloe Patten had 13 points and 10 rebounds, as the the fifth-seeded Knights routed the 13th-seeded Raiders (8-14) in a sectional final.

No leaders were reported for Morgan.

West Holmes takes on Dover at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Garaway.

Carrollton 71, Maysville 37: Hillari Baker, Kylie Ujcich and Brae Roudebush had 15 points each, sending the fourth-seeded Warriors past the 16th-seeded Panthers in a sectional final.

Carrollton will take on John Glenn at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Claymont.

Miley Fulkerson led Maysville (7-16) with 14 points, while Emily Lawson tallied nine and Avery Daniels seven.

Indian Creek 57, River View 11: The second-seeded Redskins rolled past the 20th-seeded Lady Bears and advanced to face seventh seed Steubenville at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Richmond Edison.

Friday's results

Boys Basketball

Maysville 64, John Glenn 39: Alex Bobb poured in 30 points, as the visiting Panthers (19-3, 14-2) earned their share of the Muskingum Valley League Big School Division title with a win over the Muskies (14-8, 11-5).

The visiting Panthers held a 32-24 lead at the halftime break, and then used a 32-14 second half scoring edge to coast to the MVL road victory.

Sophomore Gator Nichols added 14 points for Maysville, with sophomore Jordyn Watson contributing 11 and senior Wesley Armstead finished with nine.

Senior Caleb Larrick led the Muskies with 12, followed by sophomore C.J. Dolan put up 11 and sophomore Stehl Bates tallied eight markers.

Morgan 78, West Muskingum 64: Carson Mummey broke his own school record with 46 points, 24 in the second half, and Cutter Myers added 13 as the Raiders (8-13, 7-9) topped the Tornadoes (8-14, 6-10) in a MVL Small School Division makeup.

Zanesville 74, Meadowbrook 41: The host Blue Devils built a comfortable 34-17 lead at the halftime break to coast past the young Colts squad.

Senior Rashaud Hampton tallied a game high 24 points to lead Zanesville (7-15), with senior Drew Doyle adding 15. Senior Drake Tabler added double figure help with 12 and senior Maddox Hayes finished with nine.

Meadowbrook (1-21) was led by junior Colton Delancey and freshman Bentley Sedor with 12 points each, while freshman Michael Ray chipped in with 11 markers.

"I'm very happy with our effort, and we showed some very solid basketball through about two quarters tonight," Meadowbrook head coach Teryn Jarrett said. "We have played much more competitive basketball for longer spurts the last few games."

Cambridge 61, Bellaire 42: Junior Jesiah Barnett exploded for 30 points to lead the Bobcats to the Buckeye 8 victory over the visiting Big Reds to close out the regular season.

Cambridge held a slim 25-24 lead at the halftime break, but Barnett tallied 15 points to lead a 36-18 second half scoring advantage to improve to 6-16 on the season. Barnett turned in a solid floor game dishing out eight assists with four steals for the winners.

Senior Bradyn Gregg finished with nine for CHS, while sophomore Rylan Mathews added eight and senior Regan Rogers contributed seven points.

Caleb Jewell led Bellaire (5-17) with 16 points, with MacMac Pettigrew chipping in with 15 markers.

Swimming

Tri-Valley's Lawler just misses finals: Tri-Valley sophomore AJ Lawler placed 19th in both of his events, the 200-yard Individual Medley (2:01.44) and 100 backstroke (54.23) during Thursday's Division II preliminaries in Canton.

The top 8 earned spots in Friday's A Final and the next 8 qualified for the B Final.

Lawler was around .5 seconds from making the finals in either event.

Bowling

River View, Philo compete in districts: The Lady Bears finished fourth out of six teams during Thursday's Division II district meet at Legacy Lanes.

They totaled 3,020 pins, as Conotton Valley won with 3,527 and Carrollton was second with 3,292.

Freshman Kaylie Bryan led River View in 13th place with a 169-455 series, while senior Joni Winland added a 159-441 in 18th, freshman Karley Stocker with a 430 series in 22nd and junior Maeve Gentile with a 429 series in 24th.

Philo's Cassidy Himes tied for eighth with a 170-482 series in the girls meet, while River View senior Cam Collopy placed sixth in the boys meet with a 221-555 series. He was 23 pins from earning one of the two state individual qualifying spots.

Local Sports Briefs

Crystal Springs have openings in several leagues: Crystal Springs is looking for teams for all leagues, including the ones below. Anyone interested in any of these leagues or for more information please call 740-787-1114.

The Monday Senior League 2 Man Team Monday Mornings is looking for 2-man teams (A & B Division). Players must be 55 or older. There will be a meeting at 9 a.m. April 10 at the clubhouse. League play will start April 17. Note: We sometimes have singles looking to join this team without a partner so call if interested even without a partner.

The Tuesday League 4 Man Team Tuesday evenings with a shotgun start at 5:30 p.m. There will be a meeting/practice round at 5:30 p.m. April 25, and the league will start May 2.

The Wednesday League 2 Man Team Wednesday evenings will have a meeting at 5:30 p.m. May 3. League will start May 10, and call Jason Harrison at 740-624-6008 for more information.

MVOTA holding signups: The Muskingum Valley Old-Timers will hold Baseball Registration for current 7th & 8th grade students living in the Zanesville School District or attending Bishop Fenwick from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28 and 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 3.

Registration is $85 at the Old-Timers Club Room across from the stadium, and all home games will be played at Gant Municipal Stadium.
