Weekend Hoops: Mallar breaks points and 3-point record for Pittsford girls basketball

HILLSDALE COUNTY — Friday and Saturday night prep basketball action shattered school records for one girls prep hoops program. It also saw two boys programs receive their all-league honors for this season.

Over in Pittsford, the Wildcat girls basketball team recovered from two losses during the week with an 81-27 road win over Tekonsha. The Wildcats maintained a hold on the SCAA East heading into Week 12. Amongst the highlights on Friday night for the team, two were standouts and both were for the same player.

Junior guard Ava Mallar was able to break her own school record set last season with her 46 total points against Tekonsha. That new points-in-a-game record would not have been possible if not for Mallar tying the school record for 3s in a game. Mallar tied the school record of eight three-pointers. Six of those came within the fourth quarter.

The GVSU commit scored a total of 26 points in the second half. The junior was backed up with 12 points from Riley McCumber and 12 from senior Halle Clark.

The win sends Pittsford into a week where it faces Jackson Christian and Tekonsha at home before ending its season in Week 13 with games against Climax-Scotts and Waldron. The league title will come down to beating both a 9-8 Litchfield squad and a 11-7 Spartan team that is 10-2 in league play.

Will Carleton Academy boys play in CAC tourney, all-league honorees announced

The CAC conference tournament came down to WCA and Battle Creek Academy on Saturday night, after winning a 47-44 game against Jackson Prep, it would face off against Battle Creek Academy in the Saturday night game.

The Cougars could not overcome a first half deficit, falling to BCA 51-41.

"'I'm proud of the way our guys played tonight and, in the tournament," WCA coach Lucas Westblade said. "In the first game, we didn't play all that well and were still able to hold on for a win. I think it's important to be able to beat solid teams like JPEC even when we don't play our best."

In that finals game, Tyler Barnes scored 14, Tomas Maier had 11 and Will Thielen had six points.

The CAC all-conference team was named, as well. WCA had four honorees for the boys team. Tyler Barnes and Thomas Maier both earned first team honors. Tyler Slade earned second team honors. Will Thielen was named an honorable mention honoree.

The Cougars now have a week off to prepare for the district tournament that kicks off the MHSAA March madness tourney.

Of the five teams in their district, the Cougars have beaten four of the teams.

  • Girls Basketball: Litchfield 40, North Adams-Jerome 19

  • Girls Basketball: Waldron 33, Camden-Frontier 29

    • The Spartans improved to 13-5, 9-2 in league play, after escaping Camden-Frontier with a win. Senior Morgan Burk had 17 points and eight rebounds. Kailee Kurtz had eight points and nine rebounds. Payton Fuller added four points.

  • Girls Basketball: Homer 47, Jonesville 46

    • The Comets continued their recent trend of gritty, close games with their road trip to Homer. The Comets dropped to 11-8 overall and await their trip to the Cascades crossover game on Feb. 23.

    • Leading the way for the Comets was junior Korra Estel with 12 points, five steals and three rebounds. Haley Mach had 11 points. Alexis Trine had six points and four rebounds. Reese Stanton had four points, four assists and three steals. Lyra Nichols had five points and five rebounds.

  • Girls Basketball: Hillsdale Academy 35, Jackson Christian 8

    • The Colts stay in the hunt for an SCAA East crown with another league win. The Colts are 11-7 overall but 10-2 in league play. The Colts were led by Ava King with 12 points, five rebounds and five steals. Lydia Jackson had five points. Ella Walton, Angela Alvarez and Clara Heath all had four points. The Colts host the Spartans on Feb. 23 in a game that could play a major role into the chase for the SCAA East title.

  • Boys Basketball: Dundee 61, Hillsdale 49

    • The Hornets lost to the Vikings on the road to fall to 8-12 overall. Jack Bowles led the Hornets with 18. Ryan Bernard had 10 points. Grant Good had eight points. Brody Adams had seven points.

  • Boys Basketball: Maple Valley 55, Reading 51

    • The Rangers dropped a close one to Maple Valley on Friday night. Senior Brady Kling had 17 points. Brayden Wright and Drew Elder had 10 points. Nathan Robbins had seven points.
