Weekend Hoops: Comets enjoy homecoming sweep; other teams celebrate winter homecoming

HILLSDALE COUNTY — This weekend, a few Hillsdale County high school basketball teams celebrated their homecoming weeks with Friday night or Saturday night games to mixed results.

Jonesville sweeps homecoming night

The Jonesville boys and girls basketball teams played back-to-back matchups to celebrate their homecoming on Friday night.

The Comet girls basketball team took the court first and defeated Quincy 36-30 for their eighth win of the season.

Senior Lyra Nichols had 12 points, nine rebounds, five steals and two assists. Junior Haley Mach had nine points and three steals. Senior and Homecoming Queen Gracen Hager had six points and three rebounds. Korra Estel sank five free throws and had two assists.

The game was followed by the Comet boys team's matchup with Vandercook Lake. The Comets rebounded from their loss to Napoleon earlier in the week with a 60-40 shut down of Vandercook Lake.

Senior Gavin Van Kampen had another double-double performance for his season, grabbing 10 rebounds and scoring 13. Drew Bradley looks to continue improving and has been a key asset for the group late into the season, adding 13 points of his own. Warrick Elder had 11 points and freshman Caleb Blonde had 11 points. The team improved to 11-4 overall, 8-3 in the conference.

Senior girls basketball athlete Gracen Hager was named Homecoming Queen alongside senior Comet David Fowler (2023 honorable mention dream team cross country athlete).

With the two wins, both Comet teams are undefeated heading into a tough week of games. The boys hoops squad will play Manchester on the road and face Addison to end the week. The girls hoops squad takes on Brooklyn Columbia Central, who leads the league, on Tuesday night on the road before hosting Addison at home.

Reading drops game to Springport on homecoming night

The Reading Rangers held their homecoming on Friday night, and despite a strong first half, the boys basketball team was unable to keep up with a talented Springport squad.

The Rangers were down 31-23 at the half, and they had closed the gap to start the third quarter, but the Spartans rebounded some missed 3-pointers to pull back out and away from the Rangers.

Brady Kling led the Rangers on his senior homecoming night with 14 points. Brayden Wright had eight points. Senior Nate Robbins had seven points.
