This Week in Eddy County Sports: teams prepare for next round of state playoffs

Eddy County high school baseball and softball teams head to Albuquerque and Rio Rancho this week for the next round of state playoff games with hopes of bringing home championship trophies.

Carlsbad Cavemen baseball face regular season foe in playoffs

At 10 a.m. Thursday at Jennifer Riordan Spark Kindness Sports Complex in Albuquerque, the No. 3 seed Carlsbad Cavemen face No. 6 Las Cruces Centennial in the quarterfinals of the state 5A baseball playoffs.

The Cavemen and Hawks split a doubleheader March 1 in Las Cruces. Carlsbad lost the first game 6-4 and won the second game 13-6.

The Cavemen swept Albuquerque Cibola in the opening round of the playoffs Friday and Saturday by scores of 11-1 and 10-0. The opening round games were best of three.

The Hawks swept Farmington in the opening round of the playoffs in Las Cruces with scores of 12-4 and 6-2.

The Cavemen are the defending 5A state champions.

Carlsbad Cavegirls softball continues defense of 2022 state title

At 11 a.m. Thursday at Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho, the No. 2 seed Carlsbad Cavegirls take on No. 7 Albuquerque Cibola in the second round of the 5A state softball playoffs.

Friday night in Carlsbad the Cavegirls needed an extra inning to defeat No. 15 Cleveland in the opening round of the playoffs.

The Cavegirls edged the Storm 2-1 to advance to the next round.

No. 7 Cibola edged No. 10 Las Cruces Organ Mountain 9-7 in the opening round of the playoffs.

Las Cruces Centennial is the No. 1 seed in the 5A softball playoffs.

Loving Falcons baseball face Eunice in second round of 2A playoffs

At 10 a.m.  Thursday at the Jennifer Riordan Spark Kindness Sports Complex in Albuquerque, the No. 6 seed Loving Falcons face the No. 3 seed Eunice Cardinals in the quarterfinal round.

The Cardinals and Falcons are District 2-4A foes as Eunice swept the regular season series over Loving.

The Cardinals are the defending 2A state champions and the winner will face either No. 7 Tularosa or No. 2 Albuquerque Menaul/Oak Grove Thursday in the semifinals. Santa Rosa is the top seed in the 2A playoffs.

Loving Lady Falcons top team in 2A softball playoffs

At 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho, the No. 1 seed Loving Lady Falcons play either No. 8 Laguna-Acoma or No. 9 Lordsburg.

At 9 a.m. Wednesday at Cleveland High School, the Hawks and Mavericks participate in a single elimination play-in game.

The Lady Falcons are the defending 2A state softball champions.

Artesia Bulldogs baseball face Belen in second round of 4A playoffs

At 10 a.m. Thursday at the Jennifer Riordan Spark Kindness Sports Complex in Albuquerque, the No. 5 Bulldogs take on the No. 4 Eagles in the quarterfinal round of the 4A playoffs.

The Bulldogs swept No. 12 Bloomfield 10-6 and 13-3 in the opening round of the playoffs Friday and Saturday in Artesia in a best of three series.

The Eagles knocked out No. 13 Aztec by identical scores of 11-1 on Friday and Saturday.

The winner faces either No. 1 Grants or No. 8 Albuquerque Academy in the semifinals Thursday.

No. 1 Artesia faces Bernalillo in second round of 4A softball playoffs

At 9 a.m. Thursday at Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho, the top seeded Lady Bulldogs face the No. 9 Spartans.

The Lady Bulldogs defeated No. 16 Albuquerque Valley in the opening round of the 4A playoffs Friday night in Artesia 10-2.

Saturday the Spartans upset No. 8 Albuquerque Academy 13-9 in Albuquerque.
