This Week in Eddy County Sports: soccer, volleyball get spotlight during football off week

An off week for the Carlsbad High School football team does not mean a week of leisure for Cavemen and Cavegirl sports fans as the volleyball and soccer teams are in action this week.

Cavegirls soccer host three-game homestand

The Cavegirls host in-county rival Artesia in the first home match since Aug. 22 against Lovington at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Carlsbad High School.

Carlsbad (7-4) went 1-and-2 during a tournament last weekend at Albuquerque Academy.

Organ Mountain from Las Cruces travels for another weekday match at 6 p.m. on Sept. 21 at Carlsbad High School.

The Cavegirls entertain Las Cruces High School in a weekend matinee at noon on Sept. 23 at Carlsbad High School.

The match against the Lady Bulldawgs is the final non-district match of 2023.

Cavemen soccer travel and stay home this week

At 6 p.m. Tuesday in Artesia, Carlsbad seeks to stop a three-game losing streak against the Bulldogs in the lone match against the Eddy County rivals.

At 6 p.m. Friday at Carlsbad High School, the Cavemen host Las Cruces Centennial and at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Carlsbad High School, the Cavemen end the non-district portion of the schedule against Las Cruces Mayfield.

Volleyball hosts return match against Lovington

At 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Carlsbad High School, the Cavegirls have the first home match in nearly three weeks against the Lady Cats.

Carlsbad defeated Lovington 3-2 on the road Sept. 5. The Cavegirls travel to Las Cruces on Friday and Saturday for matches against Las Cruces High School and Organ Mountain.

Loving volleyball seeks sweep of New Mexico Military

At 6 p.m. Tuesday in Roswell, the Lady Falcons look to go 3-0 against the New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) Lady Colts.

The Lady Falcons defeated NMMI on Sept. 9 at the Gateway Warrior Tournament in Roswell. Loving won again during a regularly scheduled match on Sept. 12 in Loving.

Falcon football hopes to stay undefeated

At 7 p.m. Friday in Roswell, the Loving High School football team travels to NMMI for a contest against the Colts.

The Falcons are 5-0 and have outscored the competition 203-40 this season.

Artesia volleyball home after two weeks of out-of-town tournaments

At 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Artesia, the Lady Bulldogs host the Hobbs Lady Eagles in the lone match of the week.

Last weekend Artesia participated in the Zia Classic in Roswell and were at the Sweet 16 Tournament Sept. 8 and Sept. 9 in Las Cruces.

Artesia football hosts Lovington for homecoming

At 7 p.m. Friday at Bulldog Bowl, the Bulldogs entertain the Wildcats after upsetting the defending 6A champions Rio Rancho Cleveland 36-34 last week.

The Bulldogs end the non-district portion of the schedule on Sept. 29 at Santa Teresa.
