This Week in Eddy County Sports: High school teams return to action after holiday break

The New Year means most high school teams in Eddy County are back in action this week after the holiday break.

Cavemen basketball home this week before long trip

At 5 p.m. Saturday at Carlsbad High School, the Cavemen host the Rams from Rio Rancho. Next week Carlsbad is on the road for four straight games with stops in Artesia, Lovington and Las Cruces.

Jan. 23 the Cavemen return home for a four-game homestand against Lovington.

Cavegirls travel to Portales for three-day tournament

At 4 p.m. Thursday at Portales High School, Carlsbad faces Las Vegas Robertson in the opening day of the Portales Shootout.

At 5:30 p.m. Friday, the Cavegirls square off against Portales High School and the tournament concludes at 1 p.m. Saturday against Pojoaque.

Carlsbad wrestling heads to Rio Rancho

Friday and Saturday at Cleveland High School, the Cavemen and Cavegirls participate in the Conflict at Cleveland.

Loving basketball teams travel to Jal tournament

At 3:45 p.m. Thursday at Jal High School, the Loving Falcons face Santa Fe Academy for the Technology and the Classics in the opening round of the Panther Basketball Invitational.

Located 62 miles from Loving, the Falcons face either New Mexico Military Institute or Eunice in the second round Friday in Jal.

At 2 p.m. Thursday at Jal High School, the Lady Falcons face Santa Fe Academy for the Technology and the Classics on the opening day of the Lady Panther Invitational.

At 12:15 p.m. Friday, Loving faces Fort Hancock, Texas as the tournament concludes at 9 a.m. Saturday with Loving taking on the Carlsbad High School junior varsity.

Artesia bowling team heads north this weekend

At 1 p.m. Saturday in Rio Rancho, the Artesia bowling teams participate in the New Mexico High School Tournament.

Jan. 19 and Jan. 20, Artesia hosts the Dan Harvey Invitational and the Bulldog Invitational at Artesia Lanes Bowling Center.
