Week 8 Preview New twists, similar scenario for Inter-County Conference South contenders Berlin Brothersvalley, Windber (WITH PICKS)

Oct. 13—New conference. Different classifications in District 5.

Still, Berlin Brothersvalley and Windber will be in familiar territory on Friday night at the Snyder of Berlin Complex.

Each team enters a key Inter-County Conference South Division game with a 6-1 record and both carry some momentum despite contending with injuries.

"It's a great atmosphere, a great football town and a great program," Windber coach Matt Grohal said of Berlin Brothersvalley. "Coach Paul has done a marvelous job over the last 15 years. We know it's going to be a huge obstacle for us.

"This is our only chance to play them with them being in 2A and us in 1A. We want to plug in the pieces and see if we can give them a good game."

Windber is missing multiple regulars due to injury, including back Luke Hostetler, who was the area's leading rusher and scorer when he went down in the third quarter of a Week 4 game against Meyersdale. Players who stepped in to fill voids now are injured, Grohal said, necessitating others to be the "next man up."

"We have some young guys to fill in," Grohal said. "It's Windber-Berlin. Hopefully, some of these younger guys get a taste of that rivalry and step up in a bigger role than they normally have to play."

Berlin Brothersvalley coach Doug Paul expects Windber's best regardless of the situation.

Like the Ramblers, Berlin Brothersvalley has had the usual injuries throughout a grueling season, including one that limited four-year starting quarterback-safety Pace Prosser two weeks ago.

"Windber is a very well-coached team," Paul said. "They're so fundamentally sound on the defensive side of the ball. This year, they're definitely throwing in some more wrinkles.

"Geographically, we're not next-door neighbors, but we've built up a good rivalry in the last 10 years or so."

Windber leads the all-time series 25-17 dating to the two programs first meeting in 1985.

Berlin Brothersvalley has an 11-4 advantage against Windber since the 2010 season.

The Mountaineers and Ramblers have met in the District 5 playoffs four times since 2008, when the Ramblers won a Class 1A first-round contest.

The teams met again the following season in the District 5-1A title game won by Windber.

In 2012, Berlin Brothersvalley won a District 5-1A semifinal, and the Ramblers took a District 5-8 Class 2A subregional semifinal meeting in 2021.

"It's been like this for a few years," Grohal said. "It's exciting to go down there and play. It's a great stadium and a great atmosphere."

Berlin Brothersvalley has outscored its opponents 244-93.

Prosser has completed 65 of 114 passes for 1,054 yards, 15 TDs and nine interceptions. Haydon Hutzell (19 catches, 284 yards, three TDs), Cody Kimmel (11-284, five TDs) and Zander Ritenour (18-208, five TDs) all have more than 200 receiving yards.

Cooper Huston (402, six TDs), Aidan Ream (385, 3 TDs) and Prosser (357, two TDs) have combined to rush for 1,144 yards and 11 TDs.

"Pace is the guy who makes it all go," Grohal said. "He's such a good football player on both sides of the ball. He's equally as good at that safety position. He's all-state for a reason.

"We know if we have any chance of beating those guys on Friday, we have to slow him down a little bit. He can run it. He can throw it. They have so many weapons and use so many different formations. We know it's going to be a tall task for us, but we're excited about the opportunity."

Windber added the pass to its traditionally run-oriented offense, partly due to injuries and also because of the tandem of quarterback Tanner Barkley and split end Evan Brady.

Barkley has 973 passing yards, 11 TDs and two interceptions. Brady moved into the area lead with 563 receiving yards on 42 catches. The pair combined on four TD passes in Week 7's win over visiting Everett.

"They added a couple new wrinkles with formations," Paul said. "The Brady kid is a nice-sized kid with great hands. Very athletic. The Barkley boy has been putting the ball on the money. They have good chemistry. They're able to spread the ball around and keep you on your toes on defense."
