Week 7 live report: No. 1 Edgewater eyes No. 25 in regular season football streak

Top-ranked Edgewater looks to stretch its three-year regular season winning streak as Week 7 of the high school football season brings us ever closer to deciding district titles and FHSAA state playoff berths.

We have four more weeks of regular season play after tonight.

All games are at 7 p.m. unless noted otherwise.

Major matchups

No. 1 Edgewater (6-0) at Timber Creek (2-4)

Edgewater, ranked No. 2 in Class 3M (Metro), is on a 24-game regular season win streak dating to a loss at Venice in its second game of 2021. The Eagles were 10-0 last year.

Edgewater blanked the Wolves 40-0 last season.

No. 2 Seminole (5-1) at Cocoa (4-1)

Seminole topped the Tigers 35-29 in an overtime thriller in Sanford last season.

This continues one of the state’s most challenging schedules for the ‘Noles.

Cocoa won its fifth state championship last year and is ranked No. 1 in Class 2S (Suburban).

Seminole is No. 3 in 4M.

No. 7 Apopka (3-2) at No. 6 Olympia (4-1)

Apopka is No. 8 and Olympia 14 in the FHSAA 4M power rankings. They’re in different regions, both in solid position to make the playoffs.

Apopka won 38-23 last season and is 12-4 vs. the Titans.

Four area football teams are No. 1 in new FHSAA power rankings

No. 13 Ocoee (3-3) at No. 8 Winter Park (5-0)

This is no easy Homecoming game for the Wildcats. The Knights beat Winter Park 31-28 in overtime last season. They stifled the Wildcats’ fourth-and-3 play and kicked a field goal to win.

Winter Park is No. 5 in the 4M rankings.

Orlando Christian Prep (6-0) at Tohopekaliga (4-1)

OCP topped the Tigers 32-20 in 2020 in their only previous regular season meeting.

The Warriors are No. 5 in the 1M power rankings and are top-rated in their region.

Tohopekaliga is a bubble team in 4S region 3 and needs wins to stay in playoff contention.

Tigers sophomore QB Sabby Measick has thrown 26 touchdown passes spread among six different receivers.

Oak Ridge (2-2) at No. 15 Evans (3-3)

Evans, No. 6 in 4M Region 1, has won its past four games against the Pioneers to lead 29-24 in a Metro Conference series that dates to 1963.

Karlos Odum (Evans) and Anthony Anderson (Oak Ridge) landed these jobs as first-time head coaches this year.

North Miami Beach (1-4) at No. 3 Lake Mary (5-0)

The Rams jumped defending state champ Miami Columbus to take the top spot in this week’s FHSAA 4M rankings.

Lake Mary is averaging 46.6 points per game.

This 484 mile round trip is not the longest of the year for the Chargers. NMB traveled 1,240 miles round trip to lose to Niceville, Aug. 25, and also lost at South Sumter (442 miles), Sept. 1.

The Chargers losses are to defending 2M state champ Miami Central and three teams with a combined 14-3 record.

No. 4 DeLand (4-1) at Deltona (0-5)

DeLand is No. 5 in 4S Region 1 rankings.

The Bulldogs defeated Deltona in a wild 58-42 game last year for its 10th consecutive victory in the “Battle for the Bone” rivalry. DeLand leads the series 23-2.

Cypress Creek (0-5) at No. 5 Jones (2-3)

Jones, coming off a decisive win against West Orange, gets a breather in an otherwise demanding schedule.

No. 10 Lake Minneola (3-3) at Fleming Island (2-3), 7:30

Hawks aim for their second win of the week. Lake Minneola scored a lopsided 47-3 makeup game win vs. East Ridge on Monday night.

No. 11 Dr. Phillips (3-2) at Lake Nona (2-3)

Last year’s 27-14 win by DP against the Lions was their first meeting.

Lake Nona plays at Freedom.

Former DP assistant David Aubrey is a first-time head coach for Lake Nona.

Naples First Baptist (3-2) at No. 14 Wekiva (3-3)

First Baptist is the defending state champion in Class 1S,

East Ridge (3-2) at Lyman (4-2)

Lyman beat the Knights 43-14 last year and looks to maintain momentum with two 3M District 2 games coming up.

The Greyhounds, 2-0 in the district, play at East River (1-1) next week and home vs. second place Oviedo (1-0), Oct. 20.
