Week 7 girls basketball recap: Granby’s Bordonaro sets school record, two Conard players reach 1,000 points

Granby senior Alyssa Bordonaro broke the school’s girls basketball scoring record last Thursday in a 56-37 victory over Terryville.

The record was 1,203 points and Bordonaro needed 21 to break it. She scored exactly 21 points. Coach Mike D’Angelo said the record was at least 20 years old.

“It was pretty low-key; we celebrated after the game but she’s not big into that kind of stuff,” D’Angelo said. “She was very happy when she got her 1,000th point on the road because she’s not into all that stuff. She’s a very quiet kid. Very team-oriented.

“She’s kind of the key to the team. She makes us go.”

Bordonaro, a point guard who averages 17.8 ppg, four rebounds, four steals and three assists for Granby (10-4), will play at Clark next season and has plans to go to medical school following college.

Storylines of the week

If everything went according to plan, Conard’s Callie Cosgrove and her teammate Emily Knowles were going to get their 1,000th career points together on Monday against South Windsor. Knowles needed one point, Cosgrove needed 20. But things didn’t go according to plan. Knowles got hers on the first basket of the game and ended up with 15; Cosgrove ended the game, a 42-18 win, one point short. She had to wait until Friday but Cosgrove did it, scoring 25 points in a 61-47 win over Berlin Friday.

One Conard girls basketball player reaches 1,000 points, her teammate falls one short Monday night

It’s been a rough week at Southington after assistant coach Bill Queen died unexpectedly Tuesday after practice. Queen, who was in his third season as an assistant for Howie Hewitt, was 59. He played at Southington High and at Wesleyan University, and had two sons who played at Southington High. He was a longtime basketball coach in town. “It’s been an unspeakable week; there’s no words for it,” Southington athletic director Steve Risser said. “He was a beloved coach.” The players made tie-dyed shirts in Queen’s honor and will wear them at their Tuesday game at Avon. There will be a ceremony honoring Queen before the Knights’ home game Friday against Bristol Central. Their game against South Windsor last Thursday was postponed.

Windsor has played a tough schedule so far and the Warriors (8-7) have been beaten up pretty good to start the season. But Windsor, which lost to Newington earlier in the season, 52-45, turned the tables to beat Newington 51-42 on Friday.

Games to watch

Granby (10-4) at Suffield (12-2), Tuesday, 6:45 p.m.: Suffield is still sitting on top of the Class MM rankings with its only two losses to Ellington; the Wildcats have to play Granby, fourth in the NCCC standings, and Bolton, third in the NCCC later this week.

Sacred Heart (13-0) at Mercy (11-3), Tuesday, 7 p.m.: Mercy, on a four-game win streak, takes on undefeated Sacred Heart.

Holy Cross (15-0) at St. Paul (13-1), Tuesday, 7 p.m.: Big test for St. Paul, whose only loss came to Glastonbury in late December.

Simsbury (12-1) at Conard (14-1), Wednesday, 6:45 p.m.: Two of the top teams in the CCC will face off in a rematch of last year’s CCC tournament championship, which Simsbury won 40-37. Simsbury also has to play Newington Saturday so it’s a big week for the Trojans.
