Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Buffalo Bills predictions: Times-Union staff picks Week 5 game

Just like the Jaguars, our experts got back on track last week as we went 7-0 for the second time this season.

It's the second time that's happened. We also have an 0-7 week we'd like to forget about.

This week, the Jaguars play their second straight game in London, this time against the Buffalo Bills.

The Bills and Jaguars are 9-9 all-time.

The last time the two teams met, in 2021, the Jaguars stunned the Bills with a 9-6 victory. It was one of just three wins they'd have that year, two of those victories coming during Urban Meyer's short tenure as head coach.

It might best be remembered as the game where Josh Allen dominated Josh Allen.

That is, the Jaguars' defensive end Josh Allen got the better of the Bills' QB Josh Allen.

The Bills come in as 5.5-point favorites.

They've won their last three games against the Raiders, Commanders and Dolphins by a combined score of 123-33.

None of that bodes well for the Jaguars. Let's see what out experts have to say.

I don't think the Jaguars will be absolutely blown out against Josh Allen. They've played him well the last time the two teams met with far less talent on defense. Still, I think the Bills as a whole are a better team right now than Jacksonville, who is still in search of their identity. Jags lose a close one before returning home to play an important game against the Indianapolis Colts.

The Bills have been rolling since the shaky opener against the Jets. The Jaguars' offense is still off, and while getting Cam Robinson back will help I think they’re going to need more time to get back to where they were at the end of last season.

Nothing about the way the Jaguars' offense has performed suggests it wins a shootout game, and Bills quarterback Josh Allen is clearly in a zone. Those two factors aside, the NFL is a week-to-week league and Trevor Lawrence is due to have one of those games where he pulls some late-game magic. The Jaguars win in dramatic fashion and remind everyone why they were the AFC South favorite when the season started.

This might be a game for a half but if Buffalo plays anywhere near as well as it did against Miami, the Jags won't have all the answers. Their only hope is that their uncanny hex against the Bills continues and bad Josh Allen (Bills version) shows up like he did in 2021 and good Josh Allen (Jaguars version) dominates on the other side. Reverse that, it's a blowout.

Jacksonville's defense has shined this season. But I think Trevor Lawrence and the offense won't provide enough juice for the team to beat a red-hot Buffalo team coming off a big time victory last week.

Since losing to the Jets — yes, that really happened — the Bills have rolled up an average of 41 points per game. Given Jacksonville's current offensive slump, it's likely to take a couple of big plays on defense or special teams for the Jags to complete a London sweep.

I feel like a glutton for punishment, but I'm picking the Jaguars to win this game. If the Bills can lose to the Jets, they can certainly lose to the Jaguars. I'm not expecting the Jags' Josh Allen to do what he did last time these two teams played, but I think a high-performing Jags defense coupled with jet lag and buying into their own hype will hurt the Bills in this game. This is yet another game where common sense says to pick the Bills, which is why I'm going Jags. I have no common sense!
