Week 5 live report: No. 1 Edgewater clobbers No. 2 Apopka; Winter Park overcomes penalties

Friday’s No. 1 Edgewater at No. 2 Apopka game highlighted a solid Week 5 high school football schedule.

Nine area teams put their undefeated records on the line. One of the unbeatens — Orange City University (5-0) — rallied to win Thursday night. Friday winners that stayed perfect were Edgewater, Winter Park, Lake Mary, Clermont East Ridge and Orlando Christian Prep.

Before play began Thursday with three games in the Orlando area, the Florida High School Athletic Association made big news by announcing via social media that all nine of this year’s football state championship games will be played over three days at Bragg Stadium on the campus of Florida A&M University on Dec. 7-9.

That marks a return to Tallahassee, which hosted all of the 2020 finals at FSU before the FHSAA shifted larger-classification games to Fort Lauderdale’s DRV PNK Stadium for the past two years.

In 2021, the top five class finals (4A-8A) were in Fort Lauderdale and the bottom three (1A-3A) were at Gene Cox Stadium, a city venue, in Tallahassee.

In 2022, the FHSAA expanded to nine classifications in a new Metro and Suburban system and played five finals in Fort Lauderdale (2M, 3M, 3S, 4M and 4S) and four at Gene Cox Stadium (1R, 1S, 1M and 2M) a week earlier.

Super 16 Friday matchups

No. 1 Edgewater d. No. 2 Apopka, 27-0

It wasn’t even close.

No. 1 Edgewater (5-0) went on the road and made easy work of No. 2 Apopka (3-1) in a lopsided matchup of top-ranked teams in the Sentinel Super 16.

Sophomore quarterback Michael Clayton threw four touchdown passes in the first half to give the Eagles all they would need. Clayton evaded the Blue Darters’ pass rush to extend plays multiple times.

“We really practiced keeping two hands on the ball and not turning the ball over this week, and I felt comfortable out there,” Clayton said. “Going against my defense in practice really prepared me for this.”

Zion Mitchell was on the receiving end of TD passes that went for 16 and 17 yards. Versatile junior Semaj Fleming scored on a 20-yard reception while Brandon Paul hauled in a pass along the sideline, then put a move on a defender before finishing off a 33-yard score.

The Blue Darters missed on a 43-yard field goal attempt, turned the ball over on downs, and lost a fumble that led to a touchdown in the first half.

Apopka sophomore QB Tyson Davison, who suffered an ankle injury early in the season, missed his second straight game. He is expected to play Friday in a district contest at Seminole.

Edgewater is home vs. Wekiva, which also won Friday.

The Tigers (2-3), ranked No. 4 in 3M, played Top 10 teams in their first four games and turned things around with this impressive victory.

Junior receiver Vernell Brown III returned a punt 80 yards for Jones’ third touchdown of the opening quarter.

“We’ve done it all year,” Jones coach Elijah Williams said of his team’s quick start. “Every team we’ve played, we’ve gotten out on them. We just haven’t be able to sustain drives. It was good to jump out and keep the lead.”

Jones senior quarterback Trever Jackson threw 2 touchdowns against his former school. The Ole Miss commit connected with Brown for a 40-yard touchdown and junior athlete Christian Robbins for a 29-yard score.

Sophomore quarterback Dereon Coleman also saw action and ran for a 1-yard score with 22 seconds left in the 1st half to extend the Tigers’ lead to 37-0, which instituted a running clock to begin the third quarter.

Jackson played in the first and third quarters. Coleman played in the second and forth.

“They both played well,” Williams said. “They stood in, made the checks, put the offense in the right formations, lined them up, made the right calls and made the right reads. We didn’t have any turnovers, and last week we had seven. That’s a huge plus for our team.”

Terrance Sands also had an interception for Jones and senior linebacker Jacquet Robinson had a sack.

Jones has a bye next week, then hosts Cypress Creek (0-3) on Oct. 6 at 7.

No. 8 Winter Park d. No. 14 Evans, 28-13

In a sloppy penalty-filled game, Winter Park (4-0) was able to stay undefeated by picking up a home win over Evans (2-3).

“It’s not just a problem tonight, it’s a problem throughout the season,” Winter Park head coach Tim Shifflet said. “At the end of the day, that’s the kind of stuff that’s gonna end up costing you football games. It’s inexcusable.”

The two teams combined to commit a total of 27 penalties and four turnovers. Winter Park was penalized 16 times. Despite the mistakes, the Wildcats, No. 8 in the 4M state rankings, controlled the game from start to finish.

“We made some big plays offensively when we needed them. Thought the quarterback did a good job and defensively I thought we played real well,” Shifflet said. “They’re a very good football team, they’re very physical and very talented and it was one of those situations where we had to battle for the whole 48 to get a win.”

After a touchdown in the first quarter, Evans was unable to get on the board again until its final drive of the game, which was all but over.

Winter Park will travel next week to face Hagerty, which also won Friday. Evans will have an away game against Lake Brantley.

No. 15 Dr. Phillips d. No. 16 Boone, 21-3

This was Rodney Wells’ kind of football. The Dr. Phillips head coach watched his Panthers stymie Boone by never allowing the visitors’ offense past midfield.

An interception by Boone safety LJ Wilson, who returned it 45 yards, put Boone in Dr. Phillips territory. The Braves, however, had to settle for a 37-yard field goal by Blake Bolger. From there it was all Dr. Phillips (3-2).

“That’s a good night,” Wells said. “Going into a bye week we have a lot of guys banged up, so hopefully we’ll get them back. Now it’s district time.”

DP safety Maliki Wright led the defensive charge for Dr. Phillips, picking off two Boone passes. He returned one for a touchdown, but it was called back due to a penalty. UCF commit Jashad Presley, the other DP safety, also had a big night, as did linebacker Fred Thomas and the entire defensive front.

The DP touchdowns came on a 27-yard pass from Stanley Anderson to Mykel Calixte, and runs by Anderson and Kenorris White.

These teams were also side-by-side in the MaxPreps 4M rankings – with DP No. 14 and Boone No. 15. DP has beaten the Braves 10 times in a row.

No. 9 Orange City University d. Flagler Palm Coast 29-28

By Chris Hays

Thanks to the poise of junior quarterback Malachi Walters and the athleticism of Mr. Everything, Jermaine Hayes, the Titans survived a scare.

The host Titans (5-0) trailed 28-13 with seven minutes to go but rallied to pull out a pulsating victory in a Thursday night game.

Walters engineered two late scoring drives, the second culminating in a two-point conversion pass to Anthony Mays to give University a 29-28 lead. Then Hayes stepped up, as he had all game, and blocked a 29-yard FPC field goal attempt with 26 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

“I’m really proud,” first-year University head coach Justin Roberts said. “We’ve been fortunate. We’ve had, maybe some not-as-contested games, so we kind of wanted to find out what we were made of with our backs against the wall and I was really proud.

“They got up off the mat in the second half, nobody panicked and they just went back to their basics.”

The Titans, ranked No. 15 in Class 4S, followed FPC’s fourth touchdown with a scoring drive that ended with a 17-yard TD run by Jabailey Morris. The Titans converted a two-point try to make it 28-21.

UHS forced a punt and Walters passed deep to Barrett Schulz for a 48-yard TD. The Titans went for the win and got it when Walters threw to May for the two-point conversion.
