These Week 3 Top Performers helped their teams win on the court, track and field

HILLSDALE — Week 3 brought many big moments for local prep sports teams in Hillsdale County. The Pittsford cross country team had two runners take the top two spots at an invitational. Hillsdale boys tennis had three athletes earn first place medals at Lakewood.

These are some of the best highlights and stories from Week 3 of the fall high school sports season in Hillsdale County.

3 Hillsdale tennis players earn first place medals

Three of Hillsdale's tennis athletes earned first place medals at the Lakewood Tournament. The team took second place overall and had nine total Hornets bring home medals.

Matiss Marfil took first place in the number one singles tournament. The team of Brahm Gambill and Ben Kunkel took first place in number one doubles. Ben Champion brought home second place in the number two singles tournament. Alex Portteus took second in the number four singles tournament.

At third doubles, Tyson Duff and Tydan Bible took second place. At fourth doubles, Steven Pryde and Marshay Harris to second place.

Lucas Areas and Grant Walton lead local soccer teams in scoring

Hillsdale boys soccer athlete Lucas Areas had two goals in the Hornets' 7-4 win over Bronson. Teammate Alan Torres had two assists.

Soccer: Neal Brady earns 250th career coaching win with Hillsdale Academy soccer

Hillsdale Academy had a 4-1 win over Manchester and a 8-0 win over Bronson in Week 3 to bounce back from three straight losses. Grant Walton scored once against Bronson and twice against Manchester. Teammate Ridley Fast also scored three goals in Week 3. Their coach, Neal Brady, earned his 250th career coaching win after their Bronson victory.

Hillsdale Academy senior Thomas Holm leads Colts cross country to first place finish at Hudosn

Hillsdale Academy senior Thomas Holm brought home a first place medal for the Colts at the Hudson Invite. He finished the race with a time of 10:49. Teammate Grayson Rorick took second with a time of 10:57.

The boys team took first as a team. The girls cross country team took second place. Sophomore Ruth Brownlee led the way with a fourth-place finish and a time of 13:21. Teammate Ella Walton took sixth place.

Football: 11-player football teams go 0-3 for second consecutive week

Ava Ruley leads Hillsdale volleyball to a win over Hudson

Hillsdale junior setter Ava Ruley had nine digs, eight assists and five aces in her team's three-set win over the Hudson Tigers. It was the Hornets' first conference victory of the season.

Also making an impact was senior Karsyn Stebbins, who had three kills, a .750 hitting percentage and no hitting errors. Senior Annemarie Moore led with nine kills and a hitting percentage of .500. Junior Meredith Bowles had five kills and a .667 hitting percentage.

Angela Alvarez has 24 digs in Hillsdale Academy home tournament

Colt student-athlete Angela Alvarez helped lead her team to a 1-1 tournament result in front of the team's home crowd over the weekend. Alvarez had 24 digs against Mendon and Lansing Christian.

Teammate Ava King led the team with 26 kills. Clara Heath had another standout 52 total assists over the course of two games.

Gavin VanKampen leads Jonesville cross country to strong finish at Springport

Jonesville senior Gavin VanKampen led the way for the Jonesville boys cross country team at their road trip invitational held at Springport. VanKampen had a fourth-place finish and a time of 17:58.2. Right behind Gavin was teammate Caleb Blonde, who took fifth place and had a final time of 18:04.1.

The Jonesville boys cross country team took second overall. The Jonesville girls cross country team took sixth place and were led by Karly Page's ninth place finish.

Jenna Miller has 10 blocks for Litchfield volleyball

Litchfield senior Jenna Miller had 10 blocks and six kills against Camden-Frontier in an important league match. Teammate Addison McLouth had 11 digs.

Chloe Stalhood takes fourth for Hillsdale at Springport Invitational

The Hillsdale girls cross country team competed at Springport alongside county rival Jonesville. The Hornet effort was led by junior Chloe Stalhood. Stalhood took fourth overall with a time of 21:58.0.

Brooke Smith leads Pittsford girls cross country to runner-up finish at Homer

Pittsford senior Brooke Smith won another race during her 2023 fall sports season. The senior Wildcat took first place at the Homer Invitational with a final time of 19:47.7

It was a new personal best for the all-conference and state runner. Ava Mallar took second for the Wildcats with a time of 20:26.45. Riley McCumber took seventh overall with a time of 21:23.76.

The team had a second place finish at the invitational, finishing behind Leslie High School.
