Week 2 predictions for high school football games in the Springfield area
The Central State Eight Conference managed to go 2-1 against the Big 12 last week.
Rochester led the way with a 40-14 drubbing over Peoria High in what was the most anticipated game in the Springfield area while Chatham Glenwood edged Danville 14-12.
Southeast resumes the CS8 crossover against the Big 12 vs. Peoria Richwoods on Friday.
Here are this week’s predictions after compiling a 20-6 record in Week 1.
CENTRAL STATE EIGHT
Chatham Glenwood (1-0) at Lanphier (0-1): A defensive stand on the two-point conversion by Jack Dettro and a burgeoning ground game led by Jacob Ahlberg lifted Glenwood to a 14-12 nonconference win over playoff hopeful Danville. Lanphier dropped to Lincoln 41-8 in its CS8 opener. Chatham Glenwood 56, Lanphier 8
Decatur Eisenhower (0-1) at Lincoln (1-0): Ki’on Carson registered four touchdowns in Lincoln’s win over Lanphier, including a blocked punt return. He is one touchdown away from tying the school record for career TDs. Lincoln 48, Eisenhower 6

Decatur MacArthur (1-0) at Jacksonville (1-0): Senior teammates Cam’Ron Mitchell and Mani Moore combined for 235 yards and five TDs in a 51-6 win over Eisenhower. MacArthur quickly overwhelmed Southeast 50-0, led by QB Cameron France and RB Myson Johnson-Cook. France threw four TDs. Jacksonville 35, MacArthur 28
Normal University (1-0) at Sacred Heart-Griffin (0-1): SHG’s young roster was overwhelmed by 7A Nomal Community 54-14. This CS8 opener should provide a better gauge where the Cyclones truly stand among the area’s teams. The Pioneers rallied to a 35-18 win over Springfield High for a promising start in their quest for a playoff berth. SHG 45, U-High 13
Springfield High (0-1) at Rochester (1-0): Rochester, ranked No. 2 in Class 4A, manhandled 5A No. 2 Peoria. The defense furnished four interceptions en route to a dominant win over last year’s 5A state runnerup. Rochester 56, SHS 13
Peoria Richwoods (0-1) at Southeast (0-1): Richwoods bowed to Bloomington 41-0 and has gone 1-8 the past two seasons. Southeast also went 1-8 last season. Southeast 21, Richwoods 20
SANGAMO
Athens (1-0) at Pleasant Plains (0-1): Plains is coping with an early buzzsaw after falling to 2A No. 2 Maroa-Forsyth 63-14. It now meets 2A No. 5 Athens before welcoming Auburn in Week 3. The visiting Warriors emphasize the run game with the Wing-T, led by Cory Craig Jr. Athens won the previous meeting 58-28. Athens 45, Plains 21

Maroa-Forsyth (1-0) at Auburn (1-0): QB Talin Kern completed 27 of 36 passing attempts for 321 yards and three TDs in Auburn’s narrow 20-13 win over New Berlin. Grant Dobson had eight catches for 108 yards. Maroa 56, Auburn 13
Petersburg PORTA (0-1) at New Berlin (0-1): QB Lucas Bixby ran for 107 yards and completed 7 of 21 passing attempts for 78 yards and a TD in a near-upset of Auburn. PORTA’s 29-0 loss to 3A No. 3 Williamsville was called off in the second quarter due to severe weather. New Berlin 49, PORTA 0
Williamsville (1-0) at Riverton (0-1): Williamsville QB Josh Cates ran for 64 yards and completed 3 of 5 passing attempts for 63 yards and one score in a shortened appearance. His younger brother, Braddock, had five carries for 70 yards. Riverton fell to Stanford Olympia 55-0. Williamsville 56, Riverton 6
SOUTH CENTRAL
Pana (1-0) at Carlinville (1-0): Carlinville has dropped four straight to rival Pana, the three-time South Central Conference champions. Both teams tout a potent run game. Jack Rouse compiled 202 rushing yards and four TDs in Carlinville’s 35-14 win over Litchfield. Isaiah Harbert rushed for 163 yards and four TDs in Pana’s 46-34 win over Vandalia. Gillespie (0-1) at North Mac (0-1); Logan Griffith totaled 141 rushing yards and one TD in Gillespie’s 22-7 loss to Piasa Southwestern. The Piasa Birds scored 16 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to come out on top. James Graves led North Mac with 86 rushing yards in a 31-6 loss to Hillsboro. Hillsboro (1-0) at Greenville (1-0): Hillsboro dominated on the ground with 317 rushing yards and four scores, led by Zander Wells’ 111 yards and one score. Greenville blanked Staunton 40-0. Hillsboro 21, Greenville 13
Litchfield (0-1) at Piasa Southwestern (1-0): AJ Sypherd led the Purple Panthers with 109 rushing yards and one TD on 16 carries in the loss to Carlinville. Piasa 22, Litchfield 20
Staunton (0-1) at Vandalia (0-1): QB Andrew Kelly is a potent dual-threat for the Vandals. He threw for 155 yards and two scores while rushing for 167 yards and two more TDs. Vandalia 56, Staunton 6

Robinson (0-1) at Taylorville (1-0): Taylorville QB Baron Odam threw three TDs and rushed for another in a 41-6 nonconference win over Olney Richland County. Taylorville 49, Robinson 0

White Hall North Greene (0-1) at Jacksonville Routt (0-1): Routt fell to Hardin Calhoun 50-14 while White Hall North Greene dropped to 1A No. 2 Camp Point Central 40-8. Routt 28, North Greene 14

Toledo Cumberland (1-0) at Niantic Sangamon Valley (1-0): The Storm garnered a 14-0 victory over Oakland Tri-County but welcome defending league champion Toledo Cumberland. The Pirates walloped Cerro Gordo-Bement 44-0. Cumberland 35, Sangamon Valley 14
Argenta-Oreana (0-1) at Nokomis (0-1): NHS made its conference debut with a 34-16 loss to Arcola. NHS 20, Argenta 16

Danville Schlarman (1-0) at Kincaid South Fork (1-0): The Ponies whipped up a 58-12 drubbing over Edwardsville Metro-East Lutheran. Schlarman also dominated in its 52-22 win over Peoria Quest. South Fork edged the Hilltoppers in their last meeting, 38-32. South Fork 42, Schlarman 36
Decatur Unity Christian (0-1) at Pawnee (0-1): PHS bowed to one of the top teams in the state in Cambridge Ridgewood, 44-0. Unity Christian also lost 46-0 to state runnerup Amboy in Week 1. Pawnee 35, Unity Christian 21
