Wednesday's prep highlights: Williams, Young lift Sages to victory

Mar. 28—In baseball

Armstrong-Potomac 3, Fisher 1. Traxton Roberts and Kollin Asbury combined for a masterpiece on the mound for the Trojans (6-0), only allowing one hit. Roberts pitched the first four innings, striking out six batters, and picked up a pair of hits at the plate. Asbury pitched the final three innings and struck out four batters. Colton Murphy gave the A-P offense a boost with two RBI. Peyton Sapp had only hit for the Bunnies (3-3), and Jacob Chittick pitched all six innings, giving up just four hits.

Maroa-Forsyth 13, Westville 2. The Tigers (5-3) recorded 10 hits, paced by Cameron Steinbaugh with three. Drew Wichtowski and Matthew Darling drove in the team's only runs.

Marshall 4, Oakwood 3. The Comets (3-4) forced extra innings with a game-tying run in the seventh but ultimately suffered a walk-off loss in the eighth despite only allowing one hit. Bryson Marcinko had two hits to pace Oakwood's bats. Chase Harrison had a solid outing on the mound with seven strikeouts in 42 /3 innings.

Monticello 14, Champaign Central 5. The Sages (12-0) got big days from Koyie Williams and Ike Young. Williams had two hits, including a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Young was the winning pitcher and had a home run, two RBI and three runs scored. TJ Pipkins homered with two RBI for the Maroons (3-5), and Aiden Elliott hit a three-run homer.

St. Anne 15, Cissna Park 1. The Timberwolves (0-2) couldn't get much going offensively, with their only two hits coming from Brayden Bruens and Colson Carley.

St. Joseph-Ogden 18, Centennial 2. The Spartans (9-1) scored all of their runs in the first three innings, led by Braxton Waller with three hits and four RBI. Kodey McKinney connected for two hits and four RBI. Luke Landrus and Logan Rosenthal each had two hits and two RBI. Bryson Houchens pitched two scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Madden Schurvinske tallied the lone RBI for the Chargers (1-3-1).

St. Thomas More 11, Schlarman 7. The Sabers moved to 6-3 behind a three-hit, three-RBI day from Jimmy Henderson. Hayden Bates also picked up two hits in the win. Owen Jones and Noah Berryman led the Hilltoppers (1-2) with three hits apiece.

Tuscola 17, Urbana 2. Austin Cummings led the Warriors' offensive explosion with a pair of hits, including a triple, three RBI and four runs scored. Connor Musgrave pitched three scoreless innings, striking out four batters and only allowing one hit. Musgrave, along with Jon Pettry and Cole McCallister, also had two hits for Tuscola (2-7). Jaydon Riggs was a bright spot for the Tigers (1-4), connecting for two doubles, their only hits of the game.

Watseka 9, Clifton Central 8. After both teams scored five runs in the sixth inning, the Warriors (2-4) plated two more in the bottom of the seventh to earn a walk-off win. James Newell paced the offense with two hits and four RBI, and Quinn Starkey added two hits of his own.

In softball

Armstrong-Potomac 14, Fisher 13. The Trojans (4-0) earned a walk-off win in extra innings for the second day in a row, this time playing 12 innings. Tinley Parkerson had two hits and four runs scored for A-P. Ellie Jameson hit a home run, drove in two runs and walked three times. Avery Carleton provided a spark for the Bunnies (1-5) with a home run, and Brooklyn Kellems had three RBI.

Blue Ridge 7, Oakwood 4. Addison Roos had a big day at the plate and on the bases for the Knights (2-5), notching three hits, stealing four bases and scoring two runs. Cassie Zimmerman was a nice complement with a pair of RBI. Gracie Hanner and Samantha Dunavan each had two hits for the Comets (1-5).

Clifton Central 14, Watseka 3. The Warriors (6-2) got a pair of hits from Skyla Buwalda and a couple more from Mackenzie Urban and Abigail Neukomm in the loss.

Tuscola 11, Paris 5. The middle of the Warriors' lineup did the majority of the damage offensively. Zoey Thomason led the way with three hits and three RBI. Kinzie Cleland also had three hits and earned the win in the circle for Tuscola (2-3). Ava Boyer launched a home run and a double to drive in two runs. Emily Czerwonkaalso tallied two hits and two RBI.

Urbana 16, Heritage 1. Seven runs in the fourth inning sealed the first win of the season for the the Tigers (1-2). Kaya Hill had four hits, and Baylee Russell had four RBI. Lizzy Lange pitched a gem with seven strikeouts and only two hits allowed.

Westville 11, Villa Grove 2. Abby Sabalaskey had another great pitching performance for the Tigers (7-1), only allowing one hit to the Blue Devils (5-5) and striking out 17 batters, recording the 800th of her career in the process. Layla Atwood led the offense with three hits, including a grand slam, and five RBI.

In girls' soccer

Centennial 1, Monticello 0. The Chargers (3-1) earned their third straight win and broke the Sages' (8-1) eight-game win streak to start the season in a defensive battle. Payton Kaiser scored the goal, and Yameli Salinas got the assist.

St. Thomas More 9, St. Teresa 0. Leighton Clark had the game of the season, and the Sabers (2-2-1) are only five games in. Clark netted seven goals, followed by Maddy Staab with the other two.

In boys' tennis

Uni High 8, Urbana 1. The Illineks swept singles play, getting wins from Aryan Sachdev (6-1, 6-1), Mason Miao (6-2, 6-2), Taehan Lee (6-0, 7-5), Swapnil Kumar (6-0, 6-0), Kyle Fan (6-0, 6-1) and Shreyas Singh (6-3, 5-7, 10-2). Lee and Swapnil earned a 6-2, 6-1 win in No. 1 doubles, and the No. 2 doubles team of Robert Gao and Ian Pan won 4-6, 6-1, 10-4. The Tigers' No. 3 doubles team of Xander Ashley and Luke Pankau earned Urbana's lone point with a 7-5, 6-1 victory.
