Watertown Hockey: Watertown varsity teams return from holiday break with losses

The Watertown Lakers’ varsity boys and girls hockey teams returned to South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association action over the holiday weekend and dropped four games.

The Laker boys, 7-5 overall and 2-5 in the SDAHA, lost to Sioux Falls I 6-1 on Saturday in Sioux Falls and also fell to Brookings 8-0 on Thursday in the Maas Ice Arena.

The Lakers girls fell to league-leading Sioux Falls 9-1 on Saturday in Sioux Falls and to Sioux Center (Iowa) 4-1 on Sunday in Sioux Center.

In Saturday’s boys game, six players each scored one goal for Sioux Falls I (now 5-0 in SDAHA play).

Blair Boomsma scored for Watertown with Jake Bramer and Trey Allard assiting on the play. Goalie Owen McBride stopped 51 shots.

On Friday, Brookings scored four goals in the first period and improved to 5-0 in SDAHA play.

Breck Hirschoff tallied four goals and four assists for the Rangers. Logan Bortnem scored twice and Ashton Witte and Owen Schneider each once. Witte and Schneider had three assists apiece and Bortnem and Jack Merritt two each.

McBride notched 53 saves for the Lakers, who visit Sioux Center (Iowa) at 4;15 p.m. on Saturday.

Varsity Girls

Adriana Clark, Lilly Moon and Gaby Schroeder each scored two goals for Sioux Falls (9-0 in the SDAHA).

Jaclyn Lloyd scored an unassisted goal in the third period for the Lakers, who slipped to 5-5.

Goalies Emma Foisel (29) and Angelyn Birnell (11) combined for 40 saves for Watertown.

Lloyd also had the lone goal in Sunday's loss. Foisel made 27 saves.

Watertown hosts Sioux Falls at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Maas Ice Arena.
