REPLAY: Former Louisville basketball coach Denny Crum laid to rest Monday

Legendary Louisville men's basketball coach Denny Crum will be laid to rest Monday afternoon.

A funeral for Crum, who died May 9 at age 86, begins at 2 p.m. Monday at Southeast Christian Church on Blankenbaker Parkway. A private burial ceremony, reserved for family and close friends, will follow, and then Crum's life and legacy will be celebrated during an event beginning at 7 p.m. inside the KFC Yum! Center.

A San Fernando, California, native, Crum was hired at U of L in 1971 and led the Cardinals to six Final Fours and two national championships across three decades at the helm. He retired in 2001 with a 69.6% career winning percentage (675-295) and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1994.

"I lost the love of my life, and our community lost a good man who loved his adopted home town," Crum's wife, former reporter and anchor Susan Sweeney Crum, wrote in a Facebook post after his death. "My life has been better for having him in it."

Crum and Sweeney Crum married in 2001. The former coach is also survived by three children from two previous marriages — Cynthia and Steve, from his first, and Scott from his second.

In lieu of flowers, Crum's family is asking people to consider donating to the Denny Crum Scholarship Fund — which awards U of L scholarships to individuals from the Louisville area who have demonstrated leadership, community service and academic achievement — at DennyCrum.com, or to another charity.
